A Salem man has died after crashing into a car while riding an e-bike back in February.

On Feb. 28, around 10:22 p.m., an e-bike rider identified as 67-year-old Richard Allen Hawkins was riding west on Union Street Northeast when he collided into a car traveling northbound on Front Street Northeast, according to the Salem Police Department.

Witnesses told police that the traffic light for Front Street Northeast was green at the time.

The driver called 911 and remained on scene, cooperating with investigators, SPD said.

Hawkins was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, then died three weeks later, on March 14. Police did not give further details, such as if he was wearing a helmet or if there were any other potential traffic violations.

The case was sent to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, which, the SPD said, reviews all investigations regarding a death, regardless of whether criminal activity is suspected.

The police department said they have responded to three fatal crashes this year.
