In what could be a significant motivator for UK drivers without off-street parking to make the switch to electric, Octopus Electric Vehicles has launched a new on-street charging deal for new joining customers.Customers who lease an electric car through Octopus Electric Vehicles will be able to choose between either charging credit for the Octopus Electroverse network, or a 50% discount for on-street charging providers ubitricity and Connected Kerb. The 50% discount remains valid for the entire length of the EV lease, marking a new affordable way into EV ownership for those are unable to benefit from a private charger.New Octopus Electric Vehicles lease deal makes EV ownership much more affordable for those without a driveway

With the 50% discount available at on-street charging operators ubitricity and Connected Kerb, charging prices are set to start at 22.5p per kWh, significantly cheaper than the average public ‘slow’ charging cost of 54p per kWh.

This new discounted price brings it closer to line with domestic energy prices – but crucially, it allows the cost per mile to be significantly lower than an equivalent petrol car. An MG4, at a price of 22.5p per kWh, will cost around 7p per mile. An equivalent 1.5 litre Volkswagen Golf will cost around 17p per mile at current petrol prices.

Octopus Electric Vehicle’s 50% charging discount deal comes at the perfect time. Many retailers have seen massive spikes in EV interest in light of rising oil prices, including Octopus, who have reported a 36% rise in interest surrounding EV leasing.

Gurjeet Grewal, CEO of Octopus Electric Vehicles, commented:

“We’re making EV driving cheap for everyone, not just those with driveways. We’ve already helped thousands of drivers switch to electric but the landscape is changing fast, and more people without driveways are becoming EV-curious. With the increased prevalence of affordable kerbside charging and cars, now’s the perfect time to offer drivers a bundle designed for those who can’t charge at home.

By cutting kerbside charging costs in half, even more drivers can enjoy the savings and simplicity of going electric – and we’re thrilled to help people from all corners of the UK join the EV revolution.”

Matt Davies, Founder and Director of Octopus Electroverse, added:

“For too long, not having a driveway has meant paying more to go electric. That’s never sat right with us. EVs are getting cheaper, technology is getting better, and now public charging is catching up, too.

And this is just the start – we’re already gearing up to bring more networks on board to expand the offer, and the door is wide open for charge point operators who want to join us.”
