The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X crossover from the German automaker and SAIC with a 5.2-meter body and an extended-range powertrain began presales in China with a starting price of 329,800 yuan (47,715 USD). It comes standard with six seats, a dual-motor AWD for 370 kW (496 hp), and a mixed range of 1,611 km.
The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X was designed specifically for the Chinese market to compete in the local segment of full-size family crossovers. This category includes the Li Auto L9, the Aito M9, the Denza D9, the Lynk & Co 900, and other models. It will enter the market on April 25.

The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is a full-size SUV with sleek styling and hefty dimensions of 5207/1997/1810 mm. Its wheelbase reaches 3,070 mm. For clarity, it is 26 mm longer than the BMW X7. The ID. Era 9X adopts an active air intake, split headlight, a LiDAR sensor on the roof, retractable door handles, and a single taillight strip. Other features include soft-closing doors, power side steps, and multi-spoke rims.

One of the core benefits of the ID. Era 9X exterior styling is a drag coefficient of 0.253 Cd. The lower this figure, the better the aerodynamics. Vehicles with a low Cd number boast lower energy consumption on highways. For clarity, the Li Auto L9 has a noticeably higher drag coefficient of 0.306 Cd. The ID. Era 9X is available for order with six body shades: Golden, Green, Blue, Gray, White, and Black.

It offers a block of two 15.6-inch screens and a thin instrument cluster behind the wheel. The ID. Era 9X also has a head-up display. However, the interesting part of the cabin is the second-row screens integrated into decorative panels.

Other highlights of the ID. Era 9X are second-row zero-gravity seats, 27 Era Sound speakers, and a ceiling-mounted screen with a diameter of 21.4 inches. The third-row seats of this crossover could be electronically folded flat and lifted in the upright position. The car’s trunk offers 210 liters of space as standard. Its maximum volume reaches 1,014 liters.
The ID. Era 9X also adopts the Momenta R7 assisted driving model. It is capable of performing the Navigate On Autopilot (NOA) function on urban roads and highways. The new Volkswagen-branded vehicle has a 192-line LiDAR sensor on the roof, twelve cameras, twelve ultrasonic radars, and a mm-wave radar.
Powertrain, chassis, and trims
The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X is an extended-range electric vehicle. It means the internal combustion engine under the hood of this SUV doesn’t send torque directly to the wheels. Instead, it acts as a generator, supplying energy to a battery pack and electric motors. This large SUV adopts a 1.5-liter EA211 ICE for 105 kW (141 hp) under the hood. According to the brand’s officials, it consumes 4.57 liters per 100 km. Previously, a Li Auto top manager called this range extender “outdated.”
Volkswagen applied for an RWD variant of the ID. Era 9X SUV with a single e-motor for 220 kW (295 hp) during the homologation process. However, this variant wasn’t released during the presales ceremony. The new SUV is available for reservation with a dual-motor AWD for 370 kW (496 hp) as standard. This variant is paired with a 51.1 kWh battery for 347 km of EV range under CLTC conditions. The mixed range reaches 1,611 km.
The top-trim Volkswagen ID. Era 9X offers a larger 65.2 kWh battery pack for 406 km of electric range. Its mixed range reaches 1,651 km. This version boasts a peak power of 380 kW (510 hp). The car speeds up to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
The Volkswagen ID. Era 9X comes standard with rear-wheel steering, offering a turning radius of 4.85 meters. For clarity, the three-door Mini Hatch has a larger turning radius. Another feature of the car is a dual-chamber air suspension. It allows adjusting the ground clearance by 150 mm. The ID. Era 9X also has a continuous damping system.
