The 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV is the first plug-in hybrid version of Australia’s best-selling SUV. It arrives in showrooms in March 2026 with three variants, a large battery and fast-charging support.

The PHEV starts $500 above the top Hybrid variant. AWD adds $4,500 over the XSE 2WD. The GR Sport is the flagship and is AWD-only.

2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEVPHEV Powertrain and Performance

The RAV4 PHEV uses a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine paired with Toyota’s sixth-generation hybrid system. It requires 95 RON premium unleaded fuel.

The XSE 2WD has a front electric motor and produces 200kW combined. The XSE AWD and GR Sport AWD add a rear electric motor for 227kW combined. Both use a 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery.

The PHEV supports AC charging up to 11kW and DC fast charging up to 50kW. A 10-80% charge takes around 30 minutes on DC. There is also a 1,500W inverter in the cargo area for powering small appliances.

The RAV4 PHEV can charge from a standard home outlet, a dedicated home charger or a public DC fast charger. At 11kW AC, a full charge from empty takes around two hours. At 50kW DC, the battery goes from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

The PHEV also has a 1,500W inverter in the boot. This lets you run small appliances directly from the car’s battery, which is useful for camping or during a power outage.

2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEVGR Sport PHEV: The Flagship

The GR Sport is the top RAV4 PHEV variant. It is AWD-only and starts from $66,340 plus on-road costs.

It gets unique exterior styling with 20-inch twin-spoke black alloy wheels, red brake callipers, aerodynamic spoilers and a GR mesh grille. The wheel track is 20mm wider front and rear. It also has upgraded front shock absorbers, unique spring rates, a rear brace and revised electric power steering.

Inside, the GR Sport has a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, aluminium pedals, red stitching and GR logos throughout. The suede upholstery includes GR Sport knee pads.

All RAV4 PHEV models come with Toyota’s new Arene operating system. This brings a configurable home screen, voice control, Google integration and real-time navigation. Over-the-air updates are supported.

Standard safety features across the range include autonomous emergency braking, emergency steering assist, active cruise control, front and rear cross traffic alert, lane trace assist, blind spot monitoring with safe exit assist and parking support brake. Eight airbags are fitted as standard.

A new Embedded Drive Record feature uses the onboard cameras as a dashcam. You can record and save video clips while driving. The system also sends enhanced crash data to emergency services, including which airbags deployed and whether the car rolled over.
