BMW-i4-EV-discontinued

With the new i3 set to go on sale later this year, BMW is planning to discontinue another EV to make room for it.

BMW i4 discontinued and replaced by the new i3 EV

After revealing the new i3 this week, the second Neue Klasse EV following the iX3 SUV, BMW is planning to overhaul its lineup over the next few months.

While the new BMW i3 will go on sale by the end of this year, the i4 Gran Coupe is getting the axe. A company spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver that the 2026 model year will be the last for the i4.

BMW launched the i4 in 2021 with deliveries following in Europe later that year and in the US in early 2022. It was one of BMW’s first mass-market electric vehicles, alongside the iX. However, BMW’s Neue Klasse models are set to write the next chapter at the German luxury brand.

The Neue Klasse EVs, including the i3 and iX3, deliver up to 30% more driving range and 30% faster charging compared to the current i4.

Based on its sixth-gen eDrive (Gen6) with an 800-volt electric architecture, BMW said the new i3 offers “significantly longer ranges” and “even faster charging.”

According to BMW, the new i3 has an estimated driving range of up to 440 miles. Under WLTP conditions, it can drive farther on a single charge than nearly any other EV, with up to 900 km (559 miles) of range.

With up to 400 kW DC fast charging, the electric sedan can regain nearly 250 miles (440 km) of range in about 10 minutes.

BMW is set to begin i3 production at its Munich plant this summer, with deliveries scheduled for the autumn. Prices have yet to be revealed, but the iX3 50 xDrive, which will go on sale this summer, is listed with an MSRP of around $60,000. Given that, the new i3 will likely start at about $50,000 to $55,000.

With the i4 being about the same size as the new i3, it’s not a complete surprise to see BMW pull it from its lineup. It’s also expected to be more affordable with the 2026 i4 eDrive40 priced from $57,900.

Meanwhile, a replacement for the i4 could be in the pipeline. BMW’s senior vice president of product management told Car and Driver that there could be room in the lineup for a sportier, more coupe-like i4, but no other details were offered.

We will also see the new iX4 coupe crossover for the first time later this year. After BMW accidentally leaked its 2027 lineup earlier this month, Motor1 grabbed a few screenshots, revealing that the 2027 iX4 will go on sale in two versions: 40 xDrive and 50 xDrive.

With the Neue Klasse models on the way, BMW is offering up to $12,500 off in stackable discounts and low financing rates on its current EV lineup to make room for them. You can use the links below to see what’s available near you.
