The next-generation BMW X5 will make its highly anticipated debut later this year, sometime in Summer 2026. We know the new X5 will offer a slew of powertrains, including gasoline, diesel, full electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and plug-in hybrid. According to two new trademarks filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, we may now know what BMW is planning to call two plug-in variants of the upcoming G65 X5.

BMW filed for two trademarks to protect the following names: X5 50E and X5 60E. The former was originally filed on April 22, 2024, while the latter was submitted just two days later. According to the USPTO, both trademarks were published on December 3, 2024, and a notice of allowance was granted on January 24, 2025.

Based on existing BMW nomenclature, we know the presence of an “E” (likely a lower case “e”) means these are PHEV variants. BMW currently sells an X5 called the xDrive50e, which is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and an electric motor, combining to produce 483 horsepower. This new 50e is likely a replacement for that model, simplifying the name to make it easier for customers to remember. CarBuzz recently drove a BMW 550e with this powertrain, calling it the best in BMW’s lineup.

BMW confirmed 40 new or updated models arriving by 2027, including its first fully electric M car.

As for the X5 60e, that one remains more of a mystery. If this model will sit above the 50e, it stands to reason it could get the 4.4-liter V8, since that is the only engine more powerful than the inline-six. A V8 combined with a hybrid system could put the 60e into M territory with regard to output, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this model shows up as an M Performance model called the M60e, positioned below the X5 M.

These two X5 PHEV variants should be pretty interesting, but there are plenty of other X5 models coming if you want something less electrified, faster, or even more obscure. On the gas side, expect to see 40 and 40 xDrive models with the familiar B58 inline-six engine, and diesel variants for European markets. There will be several versions of the electric iX5, including a 50 xDrive, M60 xDrive, and M70 xDrive, followed by an all-electric M variant that will sell alongside the V8-powered model.

Speaking of the X5 M, it’s unclear if this model will keep the existing V8-only setup like the current model, or if it will switch to a PHEV powertrain, like the XM and M5. Later in the X5’s lifecycle (2028), the iX5 will bring back the FCEV powertrain, built in collaboration with Toyota.

Trademark filings do not always confirm the use of such names and may be used to protect names from being used by rival automakers.
