The best five-seat electric SUVs with generous rear legroom for families with tall teens are the Leap Motor C10, Geely EX5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Audi Q4 E-Tron, and Kia EV6. If you want a non electric option, you’ll find our list here. Every car on this list has been tested by BabyDrive with real families and real measurements.
Kids big and small take up A LOT of space in the car! Having emerged from the child seat years, you’re soon running tall teenagers to every extra-curricular activity and space in the back gets tight again. Those ever-growing adolescents need serious legroom AND bootspace!

It’s easy to assume all medium SUVs will be equally spacious, but not all are created equal and compared with some on the market you’d actually be better off with one of the roomier small hatchbacks (and remember how cars are supposed to feel when you drive them)! Some medium SUVs do legroom much better than others, allowing three passengers to sit comfortably without having their knees folded uncomfortably or poking into the driver’s seatback.

Good rear legroom also makes getting in and out so much easier for tall teens. And a squishy back seat is a fast track to those familiar sibling squabbles: ‘Stop touching me!’ and ‘They’re in my space!’ Please, let’s not go back there.
What rear legroom features to look for in an electric SUV
A nice wide rear seat, plenty of kick room under the front seats, and adjustable seats that can slide forward and back to distribute legroom are what you’re after. A flat central footwell is a bonus too, because it means the middle passenger doesn’t have to sit with their feet straddling a hump or with their knees around their ears. This is something electric cars often do well because the battery under the floor is flatter than the various bits that flow through that hump on petrol and hybrid models.

When a car has good internal space and legroom, some do compromise on boot space. That’s a problem with teen years because you’ve often swapped the bulky pram taking up the bootspace for needing to carry sports equipment, musical instruments, or the family dog. The good news is that every car on this list manages a decent boot alongside generous rear legroom.

Flat rear footwells often found in EVs can be an advantage for three-across comfort. Every car here has been tested with my family over the last ten years. If you are looking for a non-electric car then go to our list here.
Best electric SUVs for rear legroom
Electric vehicles have one big advantage when it comes to rear passenger space: no transmission tunnel. That means many EVs have a completely flat rear footwell, which makes a real difference for three-across comfort and for teenagers getting in and out of the back seat.

Audi Q4 E-Tron — the surprise package
The interior of the 2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron is very surprising. The cabin is spacious and its interior dimensions are actually bigger than those of the Audi Q3 and Q5, making it a great choice for tall families.

Being fully electric, the rear footwell is flat, giving fantastic legroom and kick room in the back.

This makes it easier for kids to move around to access their seats. Legroom fits a 186cm driver in front of an equal-height rear passenger, and BabyDrive’s own testing measured 186cm of rear-facing child seat clearance, which is the best result on this entire list.

Rear passengers are kept comfortable with aircon vents in the back of the console and USB-C sockets for charging devices. Seat belt pre-tensioners are fitted to the rear outer seats. The boot is a good size with storage areas behind the wheel arches and under the boot floor for charging cables.

ANCAP awarded the Q4 E-Tron five stars with 89% child occupant protection, and it also fits three child seats across. Priced from $84,900 plus on-road costs. Read the full BabyDrive Q4 E-Tron review here.
Kia EV6 – tech-loaded and roomy
The Kia EV6 is a modern and practical mid-size electric SUV for families with teens. Rear legroom is something the EV6 does extremely well, fitting a 186cm driver in front of a passenger of equal height with heaps of space to spare.

The rear doors open wide and there is no hump in the rear footwell, which makes accessing the seat nice and easy and gives teenagers better kick room. On the back of both front seats are USB-C sockets for charging devices, and in the rear footwell there’s a 240V regular house socket, handy for charging a laptop on the way to school! iPad holders in the back of the front headrests make this a definite choice for tech-loving teens.

Boot space is the largest of the EVs on this list at 13 shopping bags, with room for a medium-size dog or whatever gear their extracurricular of choice demands.

Seat belt pre-tensioners are fitted to the rear outer seats. The EV6 has a five-star ANCAP rating and is priced from around $67,000 plus on-road costs. Read our full Kia EV6 review here.
Leapmotor C10 – great rear legroom but smallish boot
The 2025 Leapmotor C10 offers excellent comfort and interior space for tall families.

A 186cm-plus driver can sit in front of a 186cm passenger in the back with room to spare. The rear footwell is flat, giving great kick room for all three seating positions. Three teens fit comfortably across the back seats, and USB and USB-C sockets in the back of the console let tech-loving teens charge their devices on the go. Seat belt pre-tensioners are fitted to the rear outer seats, and the windows are large all around.

The trade-off is the boot. At 10 shopping bags, it’s the smallest on this list, so the generous legroom does come at the cost of cargo space. There’s still room for sports bags, instruments, or a medium-size dog but it’s tighter than the others.

ANCAP gave the C10 five stars with 87% child occupant protection. Priced from $45,888 plus on-road costs. Read the full BabyDrive Leapmotor C10 review here.
Geely EX5 – hidden storage king!
One of the best medium-size electric SUVs for families with tall teens, the 2025 Geely EX5 has fantastic interior space and legroom. A 186cm-plus driver can sit in front of an equally tall teen in the back.

The footwell is completely flat, making it really nice and easy for passengers to access their seats and giving all three rear positions excellent kick room.

What really sets the EX5 apart is the storage. In the back of the central console are air vents, USB-C sockets and phone storage. A large drawer pulls out from the back of the console, and there’s another enormous drawer under the rear seats. Great for tucking away iPads and headphones.

The boot fits 11 shopping bags or all your teen’s sports gear.

Seat belt pre-tensioners are fitted to the rear outer seats. The EX5 has a five-star ANCAP rating and is priced from $42,707 plus on-road costs, making it one of the more affordable electric SUVs with this much rear legroom. Read the full BabyDrive Geely EX5 review here.
Ford Mustang Mach-E — cool looks, practical cabin
A very cool looking family EV that is extremely practical too, the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E is spacious for kids from child seat age through to lanky teens.

The rear footwell is completely flat, giving rear passengers great kick room and easy access getting in and out.

There’s ample room for a 186cm driver in front of a same-height rear passenger, with good headroom too. I did a family road trip in the UK with my lanky nephews onboard and it was very comfortable.

Rear passengers get aircon vents in the back of the console and USB-C sockets for charging devices. Seat belt pre-tensioners are fitted to the rear outer seats. The boot holds 11 shopping bags, and the boot floor can drop down about 10cm to give extra depth, which is handy.

The Mach-E has a five-star ANCAP rating and is priced from $79,990 plus on-road costs. Read the full BabyDrive Mustang Mach-E review here.
How we chose this list
Every electric SUV on this list has been physically tested by BabyDrive with real passengers and real measurements. I test rear legroom by seating passengers of measured height in front and rear positions and recording whether a 180–186cm adult can sit comfortably behind an equally tall driver (similar tests are done with rear facing and forward facing child seats). Kick room, footwell flatness, seat width, and visibility are all assessed in person. Boot space is measured using our standard shopping bag test rather than litres, because who fills their car’s boot with liquid?
I’ve only included five-seat electric medium SUVs here. If you need seven seats, check our reviews of the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, both of which offer good rear legroom too.
Common questions
Which electric SUV has the most rear legroom for tall passengers?
The Audi Q4 E-Tron measured 186cm in BabyDrive’s rear-facing child seat clearance test, making it the roomiest electric SUV on this list. The Geely EX5, Kia EV6, and Leapmotor C10 also fit a 186cm passenger behind a 186cm driver. Among petrol and hybrid options, the Subaru Forester Hybrid, GWM Haval H6, and Honda CR-V all match that 186cm result.
Do electric SUVs have more rear legroom than petrol SUVs?
Not necessarily more legroom, but electric SUVs tend to have a flat rear footwell because there’s no transmission tunnel, which makes a real difference for the middle passenger and for getting in and out of the back seat. The Geely EX5, Kia EV6, and Ford Mustang Mach-E all have completely flat rear floors.
Which electric SUV has the biggest boot and good rear legroom?
The Kia EV6 holds 13 shopping bags while still offering generous rear legroom. The Mustang Mach-E and Geely EX5 both hold 11 and the Leap Motor C10 holds 10.
Can three teenagers fit across the back of an electric SUV?
Yes, in most of the cars on this list, though comfort varies. Cars with a flat rear footwell, like the Geely EX5 and Audi Q4 E-Tron, are the most comfortable for three across because the middle passenger doesn’t have to straddle a hump. For our full list of cars that fit three child seats across, see our dedicated guide.
What is the most affordable electric SUV with good rear legroom?
The Geely EX5 starts from $42,707 plus on-road costs and has excellent rear legroom for an electric SUV at this price.
Does good rear legroom mean the boot is smaller?
Not always, but there can be a trade-off. The Leapmotor C10 has excellent legroom (186cm fit) but its boot only holds 10 shopping bags. By contrast, the Kia EV6 manages both 186cm rear legroom and 13 shopping bags, which is a very impressive result for an electric SUV.
