The $20,000 Electric Car Is Finally Legal in Canada! (BYD & Geely)
The news of Chinese electric cars coming to Canada is truly great for everyone living there. For a long time, if you wanted a good electric vehicle (EV), you mostly had to look at a Tesla. While Teslas are great cars, they can be very expensive. This made it hard for many families to switch from gas cars to electric ones. But now, things are changing. One of the biggest car companies in the whole world, called BYD, is getting ready to sell its cars in Canada. This means you will finally have more choices. You won’t have to spend a huge amount of money just to get a car that doesn’t use gas.
This change is happening because the Canadian government has made a new deal. In the past, there were very high taxes on cars coming from China. These taxes were so high—over 100%—that it was almost impossible for Chinese companies to sell their cars here. But Prime Minister Mark Carney and the government have opened a new door. They have set up a “quota” system. A quota is just a limit on how many things can come into the country. Right now, Canada will allow 49,000 Chinese electric cars to come in every year with a much lower tax. Instead of a 100% tax, it is now only about 6%. This is a huge drop! It makes the cars much cheaper for you to buy.
