Hello, Navajo and College Area!

Electric bikes and scooters have been a hot-button topic over the last few months.

I, for one, am no stranger to walking around the San Diego State University campus and having to narrowly dodge a rental e-scooter.

So far, six different cities across the county have adopted hefty e-bike regulations — and San Diego may be joining them.

District 7 Councilmember Raul Campillo has put forth what he calls the “Safe Routes to School Initiative.” Navajo’s very own representative is hoping to raise the e-bike age limit to 12 — consistent with most of the other cities — as well as implement passenger restrictions and launch a safety education campaign.

Recent research presented by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons found that, between 2019 and 2023, e-bike accidents involving children in San Diego tripled.

Unlike some other states, California does not require a license to operate the fastest class of e-bikes, though the age requirement is 16.

Campillo will be presenting his proposal to the Public Safety Committee next Wednesday. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on his plan. Are the restrictions too much? Not enough? Send all your e-bike opinions to calistas@timesofsandiego.com.
