If you want a mid-size Bavarian luxury sedan, there are many different flavors to choose from. The 2026 BMW 5 Series is currently offered in eight variations, including the simple 530i (and 530i xDrive), peppy 540i, electric i5 (and i5 M60), and high-performance M5. Each one possesses its own strengths and weaknesses, but if you want a 5 Series that can do it all, it’s the 550e xDrive.

The BMW 5 Series Hybrid, otherwise known as the 550e, is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, meaning it can be driven on gasoline, electricity, or a mix of the two. In theory, this means the 550e combines the best of both worlds between the gas-only 540i and the electric i5 with silent driving when you want it but instant range when you need it. After spending a week with this car, we learned why this is currently BMW’s ultimate powertrain, better even than the one in the M5. There is only one reason we wouldn’t recommend this particular BMW.

The 550e xDrive wouldn’t have the ultimate BMW powertrain if part of that setup didn’t include what is arguably the automaker’s most versatile engine, and one of the most reliable six-cylinders on the market today: the B58. BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six is among the smoothest and best-sounding of any engine in its class, and we know it’s capable of huge power numbers in the hands of the right tuner.

This version is actually detuned compared to the 540i to improve efficiency, so it now produces 313 horsepower instead of the usual 375 hp. Power goes out to xDrive all-wheel-drive via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Unlike the 540i, the 550e also includes an electric motor, integrated into the eight-speed transmission. That motor contributes an additional 194 hp, getting its juice from a 19 kWh battery mounted near the rear of the car. With the engine and motor working together, BMW says the 550e produces a whopping 483 hp and 516 lb-ft, third most behind only the i5 M60 and M5 in the 5 Series lineup. After a two-hour charge at 11 kW, that 19 kWh battery should net you around 33 miles of electric-only driving, which should be enough for a daily commute.

BMW says the 5 Series Hybrid’s gas-electric combination can propel it to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, making it the third-quickest in the model range behind the i5 M60 (3.7 seconds) and M5 (3.4 seconds). But like so many cars from BMW and other German brands, the 550e is too modest on its spec sheet, and ends up overperforming in the real world. With nearly a full charge, CarBuzz recorded a zero-to-60 sprint in 3.88 seconds, besting BMW’s estimate by 0.22. Despite not even wearing an M badge, the 550e can keep up with some heavy hitters with that acceleration time:
2025 BMW M5 Sedan: 3.22 seconds
2025 BMW X6 M: 3.77 seconds
2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing (Automatic): 3.8 seconds
2026 Dodge Charger Six-Pack Scat Pack: 3.86 Seconds
2024 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio: 3.99 seconds
While the M5 also beat its manufacturer-estimated 0–60 time, the delta between it and the 550e was only 0.66 seconds despite the M5’s 717-hp rating and 234-hp advantage. When you look at the cost difference between the 550e and the M5, is it really worth such a huge premium for a car that’s not even a full second quicker? The M5 certainly handles better, but if you want a four-door BMW that’s meant for the track or for spirited driving, the M3 is the superior option anyway.
It’s A Better PHEV

Not only is the M5 barely quicker than its lesser sibling, when we put the 550e into EV mode, it managed to hit 60 mph in 8.03 seconds, the quickest we’ve ever tested for a PHEV without its gas engine. For comparison, the M5 took 9.07 seconds to achieve the same sprint, even though it produces the same 194 hp from its electric motor. The M5 was likely slower because it weighs 5,390 lbs, compared to 4,894 lbs for the 550e (a 496-lb difference). Here’s how the 550e’s electric-only 0–60 time stacks up against other PHEVs and vehicles in that time range:
2024 Ford Bronco Everglades: 8.19 seconds
2024 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque P250: 8.28 seconds
2026 Toyota Rav4 GR Sport (Electric Only): 8.51 seconds
2025 McLaren Artura Spider (Electric Only): 14.87 seconds
When you aren’t mashing the throttle, the 550e is the more comfortable cruiser. It doesn’t have firm suspension that brutalizes you over rough pavement, and its B58 inline-six engine is far less violent than the S68 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 in the M5.
This powertrain is flawlessly smooth, and in our experience, far exceeds the EPA-estimated 25 MPG combined average even without being plugged in. The trip odometer regularly showed over 29 MPG during normal driving, which floated closer to 30 MPG after we started charging the 550e at home. The M5, thanks to its thirsty V8, only averages 14 MPG when its gas engine kicks on. You can also go further on electric power, 33 miles, before the gas engine kicks on in the 550e, compared to 25 miles in the M5.
If we had just one complaint about the 550e versus the M5, it’s that BMW does not sell it as a wagon here in the United States.
5 Series Flaws (What The LCI Can Fix)

Get Some Neue Klasse Styling
At this point, it should be quite obvious that we are enamored by the powertrain in the 550e. What’s not to love? You get nearly 500 hp, over 30 MPG if you keep it charged, and an electric driving range for your daily commute. But the 5 Series is not the most attractive package to house what is otherwise an amazing feat of engineering. This latest G60 generation is far less attractive than the G30 it replaced, and we are eagerly awaiting BMW’s first major facelift or “Life Cycle Impulse” (LCI) for the 5 Series.

You’ll have a bit longer to savor that giant kidney grille.
You can expect the LCI to include styling that’s reminiscent of the Neue Klasse Concept, which will also appear on the upcoming 3 Series. This includes grille elements shaped with light and a wider front fascia. We desperately hope this design language, which was first used on the iX3, will translate well to a mid-size sedan, and give the 5 Series more drama and curb appeal that it currently lacks.
This Executive Needs Some Assistance

In addition to the much-needed exterior facelift, the 5 Series LCI will also undergo some drastic changes inside the cabin. Expect it to look more like the iX3 inside, meaning it should have the iDrive Panoramic Vision screen that stretches across the dashboard. While our experience with this system is brief, it was more intuitive than the existing BMW Operating System 8.5 that’s in the 2026 5 Series. The current system has too many menu icons and layers of menus, making it difficult to complete simple tasks.
Even basic functions, like adjusting the air conditioning, require a minimum of two screen or button taps, and that’s assuming you can figure out how to get BMW’s fussy vents pointed in the right direction. BMW may switch to electronic air vents, like the iX3 has, but that may be an improvement compared to the silly directional pads in the 5 Series.
And though it’s nothing new for BMW, we were shocked to see our test car missing many features we’d expect to find in a vehicle in this price range: ventilated front seats, massage seats, heated rear seats, hands-free driving, upgraded audio. Some of these amenities are available, but were not selected, but others (like massage seats) are simply not offered on this generation of 5 Series.
BMW’s Other PHEV Models

By the end of our week with the 2026 BMW 550e, we reached a clear conclusion: this is BMW’s best powertrain, but the 5 Series is not the car we would choose to put it in. Not counting the V8-powered M5 and XM, BMW currently offers three PHEV models: the 550e xDrive, the X5 xDrive50e, and the 750e xDrive.

With a $110,000 starting price, we’d rule out the 750e unless money is no object to you, in which case we’d say it’s everything we love about the 550e, with the luxury and comfort dialed up to the max. If money were no object, the 750e might be the ultimate way to travel to work comfortably without also spending a fortune on fuel. It’s kind of an oxymoron, but a good one.

That leaves the X5 xDrive50e, a vehicle that, by our estimation, is superior to the 550e in almost every way. These two vehicles share a powertrain, meaning they have the same engine, transmission, horsepower, and torque ratings. The only difference is their battery sizes.

The X5 gets a larger pack to offset its heavier weight and less aerodynamic body, and that ends up yielding it a superior EV range of 38 miles, though the 550e achieves higher fuel economy when using its gas engine. Even factoring in the X5’s thirstier nature, the EPA says it should still go further between gas and electricity, 440 miles total compared to 430 miles in the 550e.

An interior shot of the 2026 BMW X5 xDrive50eBMW
What you sacrifice in a minor efficiency loss with the X5 Hybrid, you gain in a more practical, luxurious, and attractive vehicle. The X5 is significantly larger than the 5 Series, with 33 cubic feet of space in its trunk (compared to 18.4 cubes in the 550e) and 71.2 cubes with the seats folded. While it can’t pull the same 7,200 lbs as its non-hybrid siblings, the X5 xDrive50e can tow up to 5,952 lbs, something you can’t do with the 5 Series.
Inside, the X5’s cabin is a bit more traditional, and it has air vents that are much easier to aim without fussing. Unlike the 5 Series, the X5 can be equipped with massage seats, soft close doors, and a moonroof that opens. Admittedly, the 550e is quicker to 60 mph by half a second, but the X5 Hybrid isn’t exactly slow and should beat its estimated acceleration time.

If you love sedans, the 550e is a stellar option, one that we would recommend above the M5 for its ability to do everything well. However, the X5 Hybrid is a superior value for just $500 more, starting at $76,000. It’s a more handsome vehicle, has more available luxury features, more space inside, and few drawbacks. If you want BMW’s ultimate powertrain in its ultimate vehicle, get the X5 PHEV.
