The Subaru Legacy SUS was created as a direct response to specific customer demands in the New England area, who required the off-road capabilities of the Outback model but strictly refused the wagon body style. This raised sedan, originally intended as a limited edition, managed to combine the elegance of a three-box body with the rugged character of an off-roader, thereby gaining unexpected popularity and cult car status.

I found the engineering and design of this obscure car so fascinating that I wrote a full deep-dive article about it. If you want to read the whole story, you can check it out on my Substack here: https://autoamazed.substack.com/p/subaru-legacy-sus-japanese-engineering
