Sometimes ultrafast chargers turn out to be about 180 kW to 350 kW, but these new BYD chargers are actually ultrafast, providing 1,000 kW, or 1 MW, of power capacity.
Now, that may sound great because an EV might, in theory, be able to receive over 200 miles of range in just about 5 minutes. However, how many EVs can charge at such a high rate? They might mostly be BYD, Zeekr, and Xpeng models, which are obviously all Chinese.
It appears BYD is playing a rough game by outpacing the competition with an extreme charging speed and by building EVs at very low prices in order to take over and dominate EV markets. This source says there may be over 3,000 one-megawatt BYD chargers installed in Europe soon, by the end of the year.
Some time ago, on a YouTube video in the comments section, I saw a lady complaining that even relatively slow 250 kW fast chargers were too fast. She didn’t have time for a bio break, to rest, to relax, and to have lunch because her EV charged much faster than she expected. So, how many EV owners actually feel a need for 1,000 kW chargers?
It might not be necessary for most driving to have 1,000 kW chargers. Though, again, BYD might be playing a strategic game. It may not have much to do with practical matters and be mostly about business strategy. Of course, there are many people who may believe they need to be able to add over 200 miles in five minutes, but perhaps such a belief is more grounded in emotion than in fact.
Do the readers on this site believe it is necessary to have EV chargers capable of charging at 1,000 kW?
