In November, reports suggested Tesla was preparing to introduce a seven-seat Model Y in Europe, as the company looks to stabilise sales in a region where deliveries declined last year.
Tesla has now confirmed the seven-seat Model Y is available across Europe. In a post on X, Tesla shared: “Model Y Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) now available w/ 7-seat configuration in Europe”.
The third-row configuration is available on the Premium Model Y Long Range AWD for an additional €2,500 (around $A4,150) in markets such as Germany.
he 2+3+2 layout means the third row occupies part of the boot space, but it can be folded flat when not in use. With all seven seats in place, boot capacity drops to 381 litres, which is modest compared to the five-seat configuration.
This update was welcomed by a few owners, one saying: “Great to see the 7-seat Model Y in Europe!”
Others were waiting for the bigger, more spacious Model Y L, which is bound for Australia. The top reply to the announcement on X said: “That’s very nice, but everyone is waiting on the Model YL”.
Even the Tesla Owners UK shared that they would rather have the Model Y L in the UK market over this less spacious variant: “No thanks tesla_uk, we want the 6 seat MY L”.
The seven-seat Model Y has been offered intermittently in the US, but European and other international markets have largely missed out.
As mentioned above, reports from November indicated that this car, with 7 seats and an AWD powertrain, was likely a version built in Europe for those markets.
It’s now confirmed to also be following the same dimensions as the standard Model Y, coming in at 4.79 metres.
Recent reports of the Australian-bound extended-wheelbase Model Y L show that its length is 4.96 metres, allowing more space in the rear seats and boot.
Deliveries of the new 7-seater in Europe are expected to start in April.
Whether the compact third-row layout is enough to lift European sales remains to be seen. In Australia, however, attention is likely to centre on the larger Model Y L, which promises significantly more space for growing families.
