The crash was reported around 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, along northbound I-69 around 15 miles south of Huntington.

HUNTINGTON COUNTY, Ind. — A driver was killed when a car crashed into a parked semi on Interstate 69 in Huntington County Saturday afternoon.

The crash was reported around 3:15 p.m. Feb. 28 at the 273 mile-marker of northbound I-69, around 15 miles south of Huntington.

The Huntington County Sheriff’s Department said a Tesla Model 3 was northbound on I-69 when it drove into the trailer of a parked semi.

“According to several eyewitnesses, the Tesla had previously been passing vehicles using the shoulder of the interstate, and it was doing so at a high rate of speed” before striking the semi, which had been parked along the shoulder of the off-ramp for an extended period, the sheriff’s office said.

The Tesla driver, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the semi were checked out at the scene by medics.

“Speed and unsafe passing are the primary contributors to the crash,” the sheriff’s office said.

All lanes of northbound I-69 were closed for a few hours Saturday evening but have since reopened.
