SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Police Department confirmed an 11-year-old was seriously injured on Friday evening after the child crashed on an electric motorcycle at a park.
According to SDPD, at around 5:28 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a reported crash at Jerabek Park in Scripps Ranch. When officers arrived, they reportedly found an 11-year-old child who crashed the e-motorcycle within the park.
The child sustained a serious head injury and a compound leg fracture and was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital, SDPD says.
The incident comes in the wake of a child crashing an e-bike into a car in Carlsbad on Wednesday morning, the same day the city implemented stricter e-bike regulations aimed at improving safety. That child sustained minor injuries in the crash.
SDPD reminds the public that off-highway electric motorcycles are not permitted to be operated in any City of San Diego park. The vehicles must be properly registered, insured and equipped with all safety equipment required under the California Vehicle Code.
Operators must also possess a valid Class C driver’s license and an M1 motorcycle license.
The investigation into the e-motorcycle crash is still ongoing.
