LORIS — A 27-year-old man has been charged with murder after police used location data from his Tesla to place him at the scene of a deadly shooting in Horry County, authorities said.
Dreshawn Stanley of Longwood, N.C., was arrested Feb. 24 and charged with murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime.
Police allege Stanley shot and killed 18-year-old Christian Hemingway last year along Cedar Branch Road in Loris, according to Stanley’s arrest warrants.
Horry County police responded at 1:48 a.m. Aug. 17 to a report of gunshots along Cedar Branch Road in Loris. When authorities arrived they found Hemingway wounded. He was transported to McLeod Health Loris where he later died.
Hemingway lived a short distance from where the shooting took place, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office.
Stanley was identified as a suspect after police retrieved digital location data from his white Tesla Model S, which he allegedly drove to the scene, as well as text messages he sent on his phone, according to court records.
“Additionally, the defendant was found to be in possession of the firearm used in the incident,” an arrest warrant states.
Stanley is being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bond for both charges.
