Renewable energy projects in Colorado keep popping up all over; a large battery facility will begin taking shape in Weld County in 2026. These Tesla batteries are state-of-the-art and can be activated, as needed, right away.
What Tesla Batteries are Coming to Frederick, Colorado?
Say what you will about Tesla, the technology the company has can be pretty amazing. It’s hard to wrap you head around how they create these batteries than can store so much power, that can be used when the existing grid gets overworked. These batteries are called the Tesla Megapack.
According to BizWest and ScottKJames.com, the project is named the Spindle Hill Energy Center, though it’s not to be confused with the nearby (Fort Lupton) natural gas facility also named Spindle Hill which is owned by Invenergy; the Frederick center is owned by Clearway.
Where Will the Batteries in Frederick Get the Energy They Store?
The Tesla Megapacks, about 100 of them, will get energy to store from the Excel grid to hold 398 megawatt hours. I reached out to Clearway and they stated that they have no plans to implement solar technology at the site at this time. It wouldn’t be crazy to think that, down the line, they could put solar panels above the batteries, however.

The overall cost of the Tesla battery center is $261 million, and according to ScottKJames.com, will be bringing in about $12 million in tax revenues over the next 25 years. It’s a win-win, as the batteries will be ready to help out the local area when needed, while bringing money for the area.
