The government has launched the Prime Minister’s Electric Bike and Rickshaw Scheme 2026 under the PAVE programme to promote affordable and environmentally friendly transport across Pakistan.
Hamad Ali Mansoor, Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Development Board (EDB), outlined the scope, funding and eligibility criteria of the initiative.
Mansoor said the government has allocated Rs100 billion for the electric bike and rickshaw scheme over the next five years. For the current fiscal year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has earmarked Rs9 billion.
Under the scheme, 116,000 electric motorcycles will be subsidised during the ongoing fiscal year, with a subsidy of Rs80,000 per motorcycle. In parallel, the electric rickshaw component offers a subsidy of Rs400,000 per rickshaw.
The EDB chief said electric motorcycles under the Prime Minister’s EV initiative are priced Rs50,000 to Rs60,000 lower than comparable models available in the market. He added that the government aims to distribute 76,000 motorcycles by June.

Mansoor stressed that only individuals aged 18 and above with a valid driving licence will be eligible to benefit from the scheme.
He said the Prime Minister’s Electric Motorcycle Scheme is fully transparent, with all processes integrated into an automated system. Highlighting the economic and environmental benefits, Mansoor noted that electric motorcycles can help reduce pollution and save users up to Rs8,000 per month in fuel costs.
