MILTON-FREEWATER – Milton-Freewater Police Chief Joe Shurtz issued a public safety advisory this week warning of a sharp increase in dangerous e-bike activity and associated vandalism within the city.
The Milton-Freewater Police Department reported a rise in “close calls and near misses” involving e-bikes traveling at speeds between 20 and 30 miles per hour. Shurtz noted that many operators are illegally riding on sidewalks, running red lights, and traveling against traffic without helmets or proper lighting.
“These aren’t traditional bicycles,” Shurtz said. “They’re motorized vehicles that demand the same responsibility as any other on our roads.”
Under Oregon law, Class 3 e-bikes – which can reach speeds of 28 miles per hour – cannot be operated by anyone under the age of 16. Furthermore, any electric bike lacking pedals is classified as a motorcycle, requiring the rider to possess a valid license with a motorcycle endorsement, insurance, and proper vehicle registration.
The advisory also linked the recent uptick in e-bike usage to an increase in local criminal mischief and vandalism.
Shurtz confirmed that officers will be increasing enforcement of traffic laws to protect vulnerable pedestrians and ensure roadway safety. Shurtz reminded the public that sidewalks are reserved for pedestrians and that high-powered or modified bikes must adhere to strict legal wattage and speed limits.
