Police in Falmouth have seized an illegally modified e‑bike as part of a wider crackdown targeting the unsafe and antisocial use of electric bikes across the town.
The action followed growing concern from residents about the behaviour of a minority of riders.
The e‑bike was confiscated on Saturday, February 14 after officers from the Neighbourhood Support Team (NST) spotted a rider travelling without using pedals because the bike had been fitted with an illegal motor.
Inspector Rick Milburn, who leads neighbourhood policing in the area, said keeping the public safe is the force’s priority.
“Ultimately, we want to keep everyone safe – that includes pedestrians, other road users and the riders themselves and these seizures are a necessary step to make sure we do just that,” he said.
“We know that the illegal use of e‑bikes has been a significant concern for local residents… our officers will be out on the streets to identify those using illegally modified bikes and using them carelessly.”
He urged anyone who witnesses suspicious or illegal e‑bike use to report it online or by calling 101, and to dial 999 if there is an immediate danger to the public.
The seizure took place during a five‑hour patrol carried out by the NST in Falmouth, during which officers also visited licensed premises, checked in with local businesses about shoplifting concerns, and gathered intelligence on suspects linked to anti-social behaviour.

The NST operates across Cornwall and provides an increased visible presence in communities through high‑visibility foot patrols and targeted enforcement activity, including stop searches aimed at disrupting criminal conduct and antisocial behaviour.
An NST officer said the team had received positive comments from members of the public while out on patrol in Falmouth.
Devon & Cornwall Police are encouraging residents to report illegal e‑bike or e‑scooter use through the force website or by calling 101. Those wishing to provide information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers.
