The R-Class used to be made in Alabama by Mercedes U.S., and was even exported to the EU and China. But by 2012 the cars were barely selling, and actually discontinued for the US market. The car became export only, selling primarily to China where it was suprisingly popular, and even in Canada and Mexico in small numbers until 2014. But Mercedes, not ready to kill the minivan off, no longer had realestate at there US factory as they prepaired for the C-Class being produced there. To solve this problem, Mercedes hired AM General (yes, the military contractor) to build the R-320 and R-400 for them in Mishawaka Indiana (on the same assembly line as the HUMMV and the MV-1 wheelchair car), albeit in smaller numbers but freeing up the Alabamba plant for other vehicles. Apperently the car actually made Mercedes alot of money selling it like this to China.
