For some manufacturers, the change to electric power is easy. Getting from A-B can be done cleanly and quietly with battery power. But what happens when a company like Ferrari, which is often defined by the sound, emotion, and experience of combustion engines, is tasked with creating an electric car?

You get the long-awaited Ferrari Luce. It’s one of the most important cars in Ferrari’s history, and it is ready to be controversial – but not without soul.

With the amount of rumors floating around, it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake. We’ve brought everything into this guide to get you up to speed with the upcoming Ferrari model that’s sure to ruffle some feathers when it’s fully revealed later in 2026. This is all you need to know about the upcoming electric Ferrari.

The information in this article is compiled from manufacturer-supplied info as well as industry news and experiences; this is what we know about the Ferrari Luce so far – the production car may differ.

What Is The Ferrari Luce?

Simply put, the Ferrari Luce is the first electric Ferrari model. As the world moves onward with electrification, car manufacturers need to find a way to proceed to EVs without losing sight of their own philosophies. So far, Ferrari has only done a staged launch of the Luce that concludes with the full reveal in May.

“This is not just an electric car. This is an electric Ferrari. The two are very different.”

Ferrari has revealed the powertrain, interior, and name of it’s EV, but the exterior design and shape is still a closely guarded secret. So far, we’re expecting it to have four doors, four seats, and take inspiration from the brand’s current SUV, the Purosangue. Ferrari knows how conflicted fans are about this car, and they promise a ‘new kind of pulse’ from the 1,000-hp powertrain.

What Does Luce Mean?

It was originally penned as ‘Elettrica’ to signify the new powertrain, but is now called ‘Luce’. This word means ‘light’ and it was chosen because it’s meant to signify the future. With illumination, they say, comes a symbol of clarity and inspiration, expressing their approach to innovation. It’s all quite flowery, but you can tell how much is riding on making sure this car is right.

The first details to be revealed of the Ferrari Luce were about the powertrain. Enzo Ferrari once said that when you buy a Ferrari, you buy an engine and the rest of the car comes with it. That means that with the transition to electric, the beating heart of a Ferrari still has to be the star of the show.

What we know is that the quad-motor setup will generate over 1,000 horsepower, have a top speed of almost 200 miles per hour, and take this family-sized Ferrari to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. The Ferrari Luce is also said to have a range of over 329 miles from a 122 kWh liquid-cooled battery. It also has a large maximum voltage of 880 volts.

As for the sound, the Ferrari Luce is said to not use any sort of fake engine sound like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, but instead naturally feed the sound of the electric motor into the cabin through accelerometers within the rear axle casing. This sound is picked up by sensors and then fed into the cabin.

It Can Handle Corners, Too

Weight is always the biggest issue with sporty EVs, as battery packs, motors and all the extra tech you need for power can add up the pounds. To combat the weight of almost 5,100 lbs, the four motors can do torque vectoring, and the rear wheels can steer up to 2 degrees. To slow the heavy thing down, huge 15-inch Brembo brake discs are fitted to provide 0.68 G of braking force.

The active suspension setup we know from the Purosangue also makes an appearance. This is done through lengthening the pitch of the recirculating ball screw inside the damper by 20% to better handle bumps. The screw is connected to an electrical system that can actively turn the screw to control the body.

Have You Seen That Gorgeous Interior?

Ferrari interiors as of late have been… divisive. In a quest for minimalism, the company has added virtual buttons onto the steering wheel, including the start/stop switch. To create the new Ferrari’s interior, though, Ferrari has enlisted the help of LoveFrom, a San Francisco-based design company run by Jonny Ive, who was responsible for legendary Apple products like the iPod and iPhone. The interior mixes minimalism with utility, featuring buttons for key features.

That includes temperature control, the physical manettino dial, and the gear selector. One of the coolest elements is that to start the car, the yellow of the badge on the key transfers to the gear selector when you press it through the use of e-ink displays. There’s even a physical clock and a retro-inspired steering wheel that reminds us of vintage Ferrari models with their aluminum spokes. Oh, and the launch control button is mounted above the driver. Maximum points for making us feel like fighter pilots.

A New Player In A New Game: The Rivals

While the idea of a fast SUV has been around for a while now, the key players in this game have only appeared in the last decade or so. The Luce has to not only go against the gas-powered giants like the Aston Martin DBX or its own Purosangue sister, but also the latest electric super SUV from Porsche, which has already been revealed. The question will be for future customers: do you want a car that has all the theater of a supercar but in a more practical form, or are you willing to sacrifice gasoline-filled emotion for outright performance?

The closest rival, the Cayenne Turbo Electric, has a similar amount of power to what Ferrari promises, and Porsche has a track record of making great EVs already. It costs a healthy $163,000, but we can predict that the Ferrari Luce will probably cost more. The super SUV market makes choosing difficult for those lucky enough to buy one of these cars. There’s even the Maserati Grecale Folgore, but that has half the power of the Ferrari and will probably compete in a different price bracket entirely.

Why Is The Ferrari Luce So Important?

A lot is riding on the future of Ferrari’s electric car hopes with the Luce, as it has already delayed the development of its second electric car due to low demand. It’s the start of a new look for the brand, and with their stock value so important to them, it’s important that the initial reception is good.

It’ll also be a litmus test for future cars from other brands and their plans for electric futures. If the Luce succeeds, it’ll probably mean other luxury brands will start to develop their own SUVs more seriously. Ferrari is a brand with a long history of emotions, soul, and passion, personified through its iconic engine lineup. With the beating heart of what makes a Ferrari special gone in the Luce, can it convince customers and enthusiasts that it deserves the Ferrari badge? Ferrari has a lot to prove – and with many eyes on this product, it’ll likely have been refined and perfected as far as possible to ensure it’s not a disappointment in any way.

When Can You Buy One?

Ferrari Elettrica
Ferrari Elettrica powertrainFerrari

If you’re lucky enough to have the funds to buy one, you’ll be waiting some time. We might have to wait for a 2028 Ferrari Luce, but we’re expecting the reveal to happen on May 25th of this year, and orders to go out soon after. Like other new Ferrari models, it will probably be first exclusive to loyal customers, like with the Purosangue SUV.

Speaking of the Purosangue, that SUV costs around $400,000 before options (of which there are numerous), and you can expect the Luce to cost even more given its new status as a step forward in Ferrari’s future.
