Chinese government files have revealed GWM’s plans to release a plug-in hybrid version of the Cannon dual-cab ute.

First uncovered by Chinese outlet Autohome, the information was taken from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings.

If GWM was to bring this PHEV ute to the local market, it would likely serve as a rival to the BYD Shark 6, and the Ford Ranger PHEV.

It would also represent the second plug-in hybrid ute offering from the Chinese brand, as the Cannon Alpha PHEV is in GWM’s local line-up already.

The official government documents state the Cannon PHEV will make use of a 2.0-litre petrol engine which will be paired with at least one electric motor, and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.

The battery’s capacity remains unknown, as does how many electric motors this ute will use.

The combined power output sits at 180kW, and torque figures are yet to be revealed.

This modest figure is inline with what we’d expect to see from a Cannon PHEV, as the larger Cannon Alpha PHEV currently on sale produces 300kW/750Nm.

As for its overall aesthetic, this Cannon looks to follow in the footsteps of the new diesel version released in China last year.
