MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – Marion could soon require electric bike and scooter riders to follow new rules.
Marion Police Chief Jeremy Sprague proposes that the city put speed limits of 10 miles per hour for e-bikes and scooters on sidewalks and 15 miles per hour on city trails. The proposal also includes rules that riders follow the same laws as other cyclists.
“What that will help us do is it would align, we’re aligning with Iowa code as well as provide some additional things, such as the speed limit, to help us with enforcement,” Sprague said.
Chief Sprague says there are already state laws regulating e-bikes and scooters, but says the wide variety of brands makes enforcement difficult. He wants the changes to be in place by next month.
