No really, these things are half the price of comparable Fits. $4,500 for a 5 spd manual, 2,300lb, 1.5L, 131k mile car with ZERO mechanical issues. In fact it even had a few upgrades. Koni wheels, 10% tints, roof rack and an aftermarket stereo with a dedicated amp hidden by the glove box.
I got this because I've been wanting to drive something slow. Something that makes driving challenging and entertaining. I already have an ND1 Miata that I rent out on Turo but it just wasn't slow enough.
For a while I was thinking about a Honda HRV (9.6sec to 60) to rent out on Turo like my other cars. However I'm about to move out and get my first full-time job. This popped up (11.5sec to 60) on marketplace and I knew I had to have it.
I love it. It's just so funny. It's a shit post. It's a little green car.
You have to downshift for everything. It feels like I'm in fast and furious with all these shifts.
People see me doing my best to hoon this thing around and they respond to it. The other day I had a guy in a lifted Silverado revving at me. He had an aftermarket exhaust. He reved it. Car sounded great. I rev back and we both laugh. Hilarious.
Some odd things about the car. When I was installing the subwoofer I found 120 AR-15 bullets hidden under the driver's carpet. It sounded like a bucket of change rattling around every time you took a turn. The previous owner said he knew nothing about it. Hilarious.
This car was released internationally in 2007 and it has 2007 gas mileage. I'm getting between 26 and 29 miles per gallon. Kind of bullshit that it's slow AND inefficient.
It doesn't help that 80mph is the speed of choice for Phoenix highways.
The car is geared to be at 3700rpm at 80 which is good. That's where the car makes peak torque and it needs every bit of that torque to stay at 80 mph. You take it into the mountains you have to chill at redline in third to maintain 80mph. Hilarious.
I do worry that it's a little uncool. The idea of showing up to a date in this thing. That's tough. Luckily I rent out a few other cars on Turo so I have something more grown up when needed.
2,300 lbs. Yeah, it handles. Quite tossible and neutral enough to get the back end out under trail braking.
It's kind of unreal how cheap this thing is to maintain. $80 for brand name tires. Clutch kit is $80. CV axles are $80. Junkyard engine, $400. Transmission $1,200. Windshield probably $300. Mechanically it's a very low risk car.
It's freeing to have something this cheap. I just sanded the dashboard down to have a better mounting point for mag safe mount. I don't lock my doors. I can always find street parking. I don't worry about anything. It's just that cheap.
Overall I'm pumped that this sort of experience can be had at $4,500 ($86/month for 60month for you payment-minded people). It's a real car, not a project. I don't have to worry about transportation. As a bonus it's fun and has character. $65/month insurance. Spending less than $200/month on my car is going to be a solid advantage.
