We all know Toyota SUVs are a customer favorite. The RAV4 is still America’s favorite car, and a growing product portfolio means there’s a Toyota for almost everyone, from efficient hatchback to extreme supercar. While most companies went straight towards fully electric vehicles, they took the long route and deiced to focus on Toyota hybrids, and now most of its range has some sort of electrical assistance.

But automakers don’t add hybrids for no reason. Their main aim is efficiency, and the Toyota hybrid SUV lineup is pretty stacked when it comes to MPG figures. We’ve put them in order of efficiency here so that if your main aim is getting the most out of a tank, the SUVs towards the top of the list are the best choice.
We have used official manufacturer and EPA figures to compile this list, which is ranked from least to most efficient. It’s no surprise that the biggest Toyota SUV is the least efficient, but what you don’t get in mileage, you get in cavernous space in the Toyota Sequoia. This $64k family SUV has a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 that can pull up to 9,500 lbs and has 87 cubic feet of space behind the front seats. The boxy shape doesn’t do the SUV any favors, but a range of just under 500 miles is good for such a large car, and rear passengers will love the 39 inches of space in the second row and 33.7 inches in the third. While it might not be the most efficient Toyota hybrid SUVs, it’s one of the most capable due to its large displacement and oodles of power.

Next up is the Toyota Land Cruiser, which has a capable powertrain that’s inhibited by its boxy proportions and off-road-centered features. Four-wheel-drive comes as standard, and 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque mean you’ve got the speed to tackle rough terrain. It’s almost surprising that such a small displacement engine can only get 412 miles of range, but it has been tuned to deliver maximum torque at just 1,700 rpm to make crawling easier. Spec this Land Cruiser up, and you can get a stabilizer disconnect mechanism, larger tires and multi-terrain select to continue the adventure off-road.

The Toyota 4Runner has the same combined efficiency rating as the Land Cruiser, but we’re putting this one higher thanks to it’s slightly longer range. That’s probably due to the slightly bigger fuel tank (19 gallons instead of 17.9 on the Land Cruiser) and its more aerodynamic shape. It has the same engine as the previous car on this list, but you can also order this one without four-wheel-drive, which is sure to save some mileage when you don’t need it.

A big jump comes in the form of the Toyota Highlander, which has an efficiency rating of 35 miles per gallon on city streets as well as the highway. Its range of 600 miles shows just how impressive hybrid powertrains have been in recent years, too, and its CVT system is sure to be a big help in that. CVTs don’t have to wait until the engine speeds up to the right RPM, they can easily just stick at the most efficient speed right from pressing the pedal. It might not be the most exciting in the Toyota SUV hybrids range, but it’s a capable family hauler that returns MPGs safe for your wallet.

The Grand Highlander is the smaller brother to the Toyota Sequoia, as it fits in between it and the smaller Highlander. Unlike the Highlander, it has two hybrid powertrains to choose from, and you have to decide between power and efficiency. The most efficient non-turbo electrified engine gets you 619 miles of total range, the most out of any on our list, but those seeking more thrills in their family car should go for the hybrid MAX powertrain. With its bigger size, the Grand Highlander can also hold up to 97.5 cubic feet of space behind the front row, making it an efficient minivan when the seats are folded.

Toyota knows it can’t mess up the RAV4 and its plug-in hybrid powertrain as they’ve gone all in on hybrid power for this SUV in 2026. This latest generation gets an impressive 52 miles of all-electric range, 324 horsepower, and a great combined MPG figure of 41. We know there’s a ridiculous figure of 107 MPGe, but we’re counting only MPG here. Unlike the previous generation RAV4, this latest model gets a different look depending on the trim, and we personally love the GR Sport trim that combines PHEV efficiency with sporty aesthetics.

This Toyota Hybrid SUV prices itself as a value proposition first, then everything else afterward.
