GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) – The city of Gulf Shores has set several new rules for e-bike and e-scooter operations around town.

The change comes amid the fast-growing trend of e-mobility use throughout the city and growing conflicts between riders and motorists.

Some of the changes make it illegal to operate e-bikes and scooters against the flow of traffic; in areas not designated for their use; riding without a helmet; or above the posted speed limit.

Rental companies will be required to have renters watch a safety video before renting, provide a helmet and not rent to anyone than 18 without a parent or legal guardian signing a waiver.

The new laws go into effect March 1 to give time for rental companies and the city time to adjust.
