Many of the electric bikes now popular with kids and teens may not actually qualify as e-bikes under Washington law.
State lawmakers are considering legislation that would redefine what an e-bike is — and what it isn’t. Under current rules, legal e-bikes must have pedals, limited motor power, and capped speeds. Bikes that exceed those limits, or don’t have pedals at all, could be reclassified as electric motorcycles, potentially requiring licenses, training, and insurance.
