During an e-bike and e-motorcycle enforcement operation in Ewa on Thursday, police officers issued 12 citations and recovered six e-dirt bikes that were being operated illegally on public roads, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
Honolulu police said officers issued a dozen citations during an e-bike and e-motorcycle enforcement operation this week in Ewa.
During the operation on Thursday, District 8 officers issued 12 citations for driving without a license, and vehicle registration and safety check offenses. They also confiscated six e-dirt bikes that were being operated illegally on public roads, according to a Honolulu Police Department news release.
“Safety on our roadways is a shared responsibility,” District 8 Capt. Marino Carreira said in a statement. “Parents and riders should take the time to understand the laws and risks involved before operating these bikes on public streets.”
HPD said officers will continue conducting enforcement operations on Oahu to promote safety and compliance with traffic laws.
They reminded the public that e-dirt bikes and similar high-powered electric vehicles, which can reach dangerous speeds, are not legal for street use, and can pose serious risks to riders and others.
The enforcement operation comes after a large spike in Hawaii traffic deaths in 2025. A total of 128 traffic deaths were counted statewide last year, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, up from 97, or 32%, from 2024. Of last year’s tally, 82 deaths were on Oahu.
