Range remains an important selling point for many EVs, and it’s a real bragging point in the luxury market where ranges are increasing dramatically. It’s not hard to find premium brands with EVs offering well over 300 or 350 miles. Volvo seems to know this, and it has made sure its new EX60 midsize SUV will be properly equipped to take on the competition with a maximum range as high as 400 miles. Not only that, but its big battery will charge quickly, too.

It’s Not An Overly Optimistic WLTP Estimate

Often times when a European automaker first shows a new EV, it quotes WLTP test numbers for range, since that’s the standard for the region. The numbers can be impressive, but they’re usually inflated compared to those obtained using EPA testing methods, which we’ve found are frequently more accurate than WLTP numbers. Volvo specifically noted, though, that its 400-mile range was determined using EPA methodology. Exact numbers, including specific battery capacity, are still yet to be revealed, and they will likely vary depending on a vehicle’s exact equipment, but 400 miles should be realistic.

This range is quite impressive compared to the competition, too. The only SUVs with ranges of 400 miles or more are various versions of the three-row Lucid Gravity and the Rivian R1S, both of which aren’t quite direct competitors, with the former being especially high-end and on the larger side, and the latter being more of a traditional, off-road-oriented SUV than the Volvo. More direct competitors fall short. The longest-range BMW iX, Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model X, and Polestar 3 come the closest at 364, 357, 352, and 350 miles respectively.

The computer gets an upgrade, too, which can be added to the old model.

It Has Volvo’s Newest Electrical Architecture

Volvo has started rolling out its newest electrical architecture for its EVs, starting with the ES90 and the updated EX90. The EX60 will be the third model to get it. It’s an 800-volt system, rather than a 400-volt one, which allows for much faster charging. Volvo also notes that besides the new architecture, it has made changes to the software and cooling to help with charging speeds.

Volvo hasn’t released full charging speed estimates, but it does say that an EX60 will be able to add 168 miles of range in 10 minutes using a 400-kW DC fast charging station. That’s not hugely different from the estimate of 155 miles in 10 minutes for the EX90, which has an estimated range of around 305 miles. Volvo previously estimated a 10% to 80% charge time of 22 minutes for the EX90, and we wouldn’t be surprised if the EX60 has a similar charging time.

The Full Reveal Is Soon

Volvo will take the wraps off the EX60 on January 21, just a couple of weeks away. We’re expecting it to go on sale later this year. While we don’t know for sure yet, there’s a distinct possibility it could be built at Volvo’s South Carolina factory where its platform-mate, the EX90 is built. It will also be the first Volvo built using mega-cast chassis components, similar to some Tesla models.
