ELECTRIC BIKE FIRE SAFETY

Recently, Horry County Fire Rescue crews ran a fire incident where a camper was destroyed by fire. In the location believed to be the point of origin for the fire, was a burned electric bicycle.

With the rising popularity of these e-bikes comes an increase in fire risk and calls related to motors and chargers.

If you have or use e-bikes, remember:

o ONLY use official chargers made for the e-bike. NEVER use knockoff or generic chargers, as this can be very dangerous.

o NEVER leave these devices charging when someone’s not around to monitor. Unplug your charger if you’re leaving.

o ALWAYS look for damage or wear and tear to the e-bike itself and/or the charger. If it’s significantly beat up, have it serviced by a professional, or retire the e-bike altogether.

We don’t our next fire call to be at your house, caused by something easily preventable.

Take the time to talk to your e-bike-riding kids about this potential fire risk, too.
