Ever since someone ideated making an electric motorcycle, range and charging times have been two of the biggest concerns. A decade later, that remains the reason why we don’t see full-sized e-motorcycles gaining popularity. However, technology has come a long way now, and one innovative bikemaker has a cunning solution to eliminate range/charging time woes. We’re talking about Verge Motorcycles, which just birthed the first-ever electric motorcycle with a solid-state battery in association with the specialists at Donut Lab.

Verge And Donut Lab Join Hands To Introduce Solid-State Battery Tech On Motorcycles

Verge is no stranger to electric motorcycle innovation. It is already the first company to put a hubless wheel into production, and now, the solid-state battery initiative adds another feather to the cap. These batteries use a solid electrolyte, which makes them safer and more efficient than traditional Lithium-ion batteries. They do not catch fire and also operate stably across all operating temperatures.

Tuomo Lehtimäki, CEO of Verge Motorcycles, explains:

The use of solid-state battery technology to motorcycles in production is a historic breakthrough shaking up the entire automotive industry. Verge’s close development work with Donut Lab, along with battery pack testing and validation, has reached the point where we can implement the technology in the new evolution of Verge TS Pro model.

The first application of the solid-state tech comes in the TS Pro model. Verge claims the new battery is 50 percent lighter than the previous setup, while offering the same power and torque. So the rampant 0-62mph time to 3.5 seconds remains unaffected. Additionally, the battery can charge from zero to 80 percent in just 10 minutes.

That means you get about 186 miles of range by waiting for roughly the same time as you would at a gas station. Meanwhile, the maximum range lies at 217 miles, and if that’s not enough, you can pick the optional 33.3 kWh setup with a claimed 370 miles of range. In case you’re curious about the charging network, Verge bikes support NACS fast-charging.

Aside from these, you get plenty of high-quality components, too. The brakes comprise Brembo M4.32 calipers up top, the tires are Pirelli Rossos, and Ohlins suspension is a standard inclusion. Verge will also let you pick between a standard leather saddle or a perforated seat.

All that high-quality tech and componentry comes at a price, though. The TS Pro starts from $29,900, which is quite high by both EV and ICE standards. That’s more than the base price of the cheapest electric car: the Nissan Leaf. The price rises to almost $35,000 if you get the bigger battery, which puts it just $4,000 shy of the Tesla Model Y. All that said, there’s no denying the TS Pro is one of the most advanced bikes out there. And we all know that game-changing bikes are rarely easy on the pocket.
