Stop! Don’t Buy an Ebike Until You Watch This (Senior Edition)
So whether you’re a lifelong cyclist or just somebody jumping on two or maybe even three wheels to hopefully better your health, you’re in the right place. This is our video for the best ebikes for seniors. Of course, being from the ebike review space, I have been elected by my friends and family as their ebike customer support specialist. And with that most recent promotion, I got to help my mother-in-law pick out the best ebike for her. And what that really showed me is that even for somebody such as myself who’s very engaged in the ebike market, there are a lot of options. And when you combine all of those options for ebikes, as well as the fact that not everyone ages the same, there’s a lot of stuff to keep in mind. Hey everyone, I am JT from eBike Escape. And in today’s video, I’m going to be drawing from 5 years of ebike testing and reviewing expertise to bring you some honest recommendations for an ebike that hopefully is going to keep you riding for quite a number of years. So whether you’re looking for a budget commuter folding ebike or maybe even a trike, there is something on this list for you. Now, before our ebike can make the best ebikes for seniors list, there were a couple qualifications that our ebike had to meet. Starting out, the bike had to be tested in-house, meaning that there was physically an ebike escape reviewer’s butt in the saddle. Second qualification was the bike had to be from a brand that we can recognize and trust to recommend. If this wasn’t a bike that I could recommend to my mother-in-law, this was not a brand that I could recommend to you. Basically, what that boils down to is that we have bikes behind me from brands that are not going to take your money, deliver you an ebike, and then run away. They’re going to be able to offer things like post-purchase support. They’re going to be offering quality components across all of their models as well as offering some other maybe creature or technical comforts that you’re not going to get from other fly by night brands. And the third qualification for an ebike to make our list that they have to be safe. Now, I think of this in two categories. First side being as far as storage goes, all of the ebikes behind me are going to be safe to store. means that all of the bikes are going to meet UL standards and have certifications on not only the batteries but the entire electronic systems on the bikes. And then the second side is going to be when you’re actually riding the bike, the bikes are going to be safe. So it means all of the bikes are going to have things like hydraulic disc brakes. They’re going to have approachable balances of power in the motor. They’re not going to blast off and throw you off the back of the bike, but they’re also not going to leave you stranded on a hill. They’re going to be easy to get on and off of. All of the bikes are offered in step through designs, meaning that it shouldn’t be too much of an ordeal for you to get your leg up and over a top tube. Easy to step on and off, easy to catch maybe if you have to stop quickly at a light because there’s not going to be a top tube in the way. And then the last part of safety that I think is commonly overlooked is going to be weight. These are not going to be ebikes that are going to weigh hundreds of pounds. They’re going to be very difficult to manage at low speeds or simply to push around. These are going to be bikes that are very approachable and very easy to manage at low and high speeds. And one last thing before we get to the bikes on this list. If you want any more information that I offer in this video, as this is kind of an overview of the bikes, be sure to click the playlist in the upper right hand corner that’s going to take you to in-depth review of any of the ebikes that we showed today. Starting out our list, we have our probably most fullfeatured ebike. Meaning from security to tech in the display to really just your overall riding experience feels a bit more polished on these ebikes. And that’s going to be from our brand Aventin. So now over here we have the Aventin level three and over here we have the Aventin pace. Now, both these models are going to offer very similar riding experiences, but also quite a bit different. We’ll get into what’s different. Let’s start out with what is the same. Both of these models are going to be from Aventin, which is an omni channel brand. So, what that means is that Aventon is both a brand that is available online as well as in a bike shop. So, if you’re looking to pick up an ebike, but maybe you wanted to test ride it first or maybe sit on and find the right sizing for your ebike, Aventon is going to be the brand for you. One of the great things about Avent and being available in a bike shop is that they follow some maybe more traditional paths. Meaning that instead of them being offered in a one-sizefits frame option, they’re actually available in various frame sizes. Now, probably the coolest feature of both these ebikes that they happen to share is going to be access to Aventton’s ACU features. What that means is that there is a physical control unit baked into both of these bikes that allows you to use some really cool tech features, not only on security side, but as well as on the technology side. On the security side of things, you can actually have a locking rear wheel on both of these bikes. You could set up uh lock and unlock the actual rear wheel so that it would be harder to steal. You can actually geoence your bike as well as locate your bike. And all of those security features can be done from really any distance as both bikes feature a 4G connectivity. And on the feature side of utilizing that control unit, you get access to things such as overtheair updates, which event has used to push two of the coolest features that I’ve heard on new ebikes out. First one being boost mode. Gives you a little bit extra boost of power for a chunk of time as well as adding sensor swap. Meaning you can switch between a torque and a cadence sensor. For anyone that doesn’t know very quickly, a torque sensor is a sensor that’s actually in the pedals that when you put in more effort, the bike will reward you with more power. Whereas a cadence sensor is more like an onoff switch. If you’re pedaling, it gives you power. If you’re not, it turns off the power. But again, both of those boost and sensor swap features were not available from the factory. Both bikes do also feature the same 500 watt motor and 20 amp hour ULcertified battery, meaning that the overall drivetrains on the bikes are going to be very much the same. Both capable of carrying you up to class 2 speeds of 20 mph and capable with adjustment of carrying you up to that 28 mph limit of class 3. Now, while both of these bikes have a lot more similarities, albeit a lot smaller, there are quite a few big differences between the two models. Very quickly, if you look up here in the handlebars, you can very easily see some of the differences. Over here on the level, we have a much more straight handlebar complete with adjustable stem. Whereas to get some of that same adjustability on the pace model here, you get these really nice BMX style bars, no adjustable stem, but if you loosen the bolts here, you can actually lean the handlebars back to really adjust that cockpit to fit. Now, Aventton has done this because they actually advertise both these bikes a little bit different where on the pace model they call that their upright cruiser bike and the Aventon level they call that their commuter bike. Now, the commuter bike is because it has a more traditional bike frame whereas the pace has a little bit more open, a little bit more cruiser style geometry, maybe a bit more pedal forward versus pedal back like on the level. On the commuter side as well, the level has a suspension front fork where the Pace has your rigid front fork. And then if you look at the overall package, the Level comes complete with a rear rack and fenders. And the Pace does not have fenders, nor does it have a rear rack, although Aventon does offer both of those options for post purchase for the Pace. Another small difference on the pace to the level is the pace is outfitted with this much smaller display over here on the left. Still has all of the functionality built into it that we’re used to seeing from an event and display just in a little bit of a smaller package. Still very robust. Has a USBC charging port over here on the side. Whereas the level has the larger display, just a little bit larger, easier to read. And on the bottom of the display here, instead of it having a USBC, it has a USBA built into it. Now, one other key consideration you may want to have between the Pace and the Level is going to be weight. The Pace tip our scales at a mere 58 lb that was complete with battery, whereas the Level came in at about 67 lb. So, there’s about a 10 lb difference between the two models. Now, I know on paper it is merely just 10 lb, but that can sometimes make all a bit of difference, especially while out riding. Let’s jump to the next ebike on our list. Next up, we have the ebike that we have dubbed the Swiss Army knife of ebikes. That’s going to be the Ride OneUp Borsa. It is offered at just $15.95 and is a really complete bike that can do almost anything you can throw at it. partly in thanks to its Schwabby very aggressive treaded tires, its 100 millimeter travel front fork, and its 440 lb capacity frame, making it very robust and really capable of carrying almost anything or any person you can put on it. It has a 150 lb rear capacity rack, which is great for pulling almost any cargo you could think of back there. It has a very powerful 95 new meters of torque rear motor means that it’s going to help you blaze up most hills. And you get a very nice adjustable stem up here in the cockpit. So you can really tune the cockpit for maybe if you want a little bit lower, maybe a bit more over the handlebars for some of the terrain you’re throwing at it. Or if you’re just going to be cruising, you want to lift up the front handlebars, you can get all of that adjustment right here out of the stem. Now, a couple criticisms of this bike. Number one is going to be this seat. Uh it is called the Vell Plush. Not much plush to the seat. It is a very firm, very slim seat. So, if you’re somebody that maybe wants a little bit more comfort back there, definitely recommend changing out that saddle, maybe even throwing a suspension seat post on here like one that we sell at shop.ebikescape.com. Rywinup does also only offer this frame in two different options. You get the step through or the high-EP. There are no sizing options, so maybe if you’re somebody on the upper or lower end of some of those height ranges, you may find yourself being maybe a bit uncomfortable. Although, you do have that nice adjustable stem, maybe be able to dial that in. And the Vorza really symbolizes what we’ve seen out of Ride OneUp. We get a very nice, stylish bike with some very elegantly chosen componentry throughout the entire bike. And it’s really a bike that is the best bang for your buck when it comes to buying an ebike. They pack their bikes with features and really almost spare no dollar, giving you every bit of functionality they can out of your budget. Next up on our list, we have the Eupre Solar Sparrow. This comes from a brand out of Texas and they have very few models, but the models that they do have, they pack them with features, pack them with very nice small touches and offer you a very solid ebike, especially for the price. And as well, they are again US-based, so that customer support is very easy to reach. Now, let’s start talking about some of the accolades that we’ve assigned to the Eupholar Sparrow. First one has got to be that it is the simplest and that’s going to be simply because of its lack of a drivetrain. This bike is dead simple. It has a single belt down there and that belt is going to be less messy, quieter, and potentially outlast most chains that you would typically see on a bike. Now, some of the drawbacks typically of a single speed is that they just don’t have the ability to power you up certain hills or you’re going to find yourself maybe having to put in a lot more effort to maybe get going up a hill. Not with this bike thanks to its sensor switching ability. So sometimes it may be hard to put down that power to activate the torque sensor. Not with this bike. Simply switch it to cadence sensor mode if you know you’re going to be riding on hilly terrain. Boom. You get the power. It carries you right up the hill. This motor is very capable. Very impressive motor overall. It was able to carry me, Ryan, and a number of other riders up our hill at some pretty impressive speeds, especially like I said for that single speed drivetrain. Next one is going to be that it is the comfiest. That’s going to be thanks to two things. Number one, up here in the front, you have this little bellow where underneath this bellow, you get a little a bit of a suspension up there in the fork. So, it really smooths out the front. And then in the rear here, you get a SR Sunour NCX suspension rear seat post, which is going to help soak up some of those bumps. And then you get a very nice plush, comfortable seat. And then really just some of the small features such as the inclusion of a suspension rear seat post that shows Eu put some thought into some of those finer details. The last is going to be that this bike is among the lightest on our list. If you take these baskets off that this bike was weighed without those, it comes in just over 60 pounds, like 60.1. And then if you pull out the battery, this bike gets down to 54 pounds, making it very easy to transport, very easy to handle. Now, the nice things about the Eupree Solar Sparrow don’t stop with those accolades. Eupre really outfits their bikes to be complete, ready to ride out of the box. They include things like adjustable front stem, so you can really dial in the cockpit. You have this really nice sweep back handlebars up here. They even include this nice metal bell which has a nice ring to it. You get ergonomic grips. Like I said, we already talked about the plush seat, but you also get things like metal fenders both front and rear. You also get this really nice inclusion of a Mick compatible rear rack, meaning you can quickly disconnect on and off some very nice accessories. Some we even sell at shop.ebikescape.com. So, overall, the UFree Solar Sparrow is a very nice bike which packs a lot of really cool features tucked into it. Again, some nice comfort features, but it’s very capable. Don’t let that single speed drivetrain scare you away. It can definitely handle some hills. If you live in very hilly terrain though, you are going to burn through the battery maybe a bit more. Eupre does have you covered if you like some of maybe the adjustable stem, the inclusion of the suspension, rear seat, things like that. They have a number of other bikes that they offer such as their stellar falcon or city robin which pack a lot of the same features and functionality but with the inclusion of a drivetrain in the rear. Next up, we’re going to step into the world of trikes. Starting out, we’re going to start with probably the highest featured, best trike for your money, and that’s going to be the Velcrier. Now, this trike is offered at $23.99, and for that amount, you get a very wellsp speced, fullfeatured trike that is ready to go out of the box. It has folding capability. It has a very powerful rear motor. It’s got a drivetrain. It’s got a rear basket complete with integrated liner. It’s got all kinds of features and functionalities packed with through this bike trike rather that is going to keep you riding for a long time. Now, we look at trikes more as mobility tools. So, they’re really for anybody in life who’s not capable of balancing on two wheels for any number of reasons. A trike is a great way to get back some of that mobility and get out and be able to do things on your own. They do not handle the same as a bike. They are a bit quirkier and take a little bit of getting used to, but Velri has thought about that by adding a beginner mode which capture top speed as the faster you go, the quicker things can happen and just really quicker things come at you and if you’re not prepared for it, they could really end up in a negative situation. But Velri has thought about that. They’ve included things like hydraulic disc brakes which are going to get you slowed down very quickly. It’s a very nice easy step through frame. You get this really nice large seat complete with back. You get fenders all around. You get a differential in the rear. What that means is that the power goes to both rear wheels evenly. And you also don’t have the motor in the front. So, it’s not pulling you along. It’s really pushing you. Just feels a bit nicer overall. Now, the nice thing about picking up such a fullfeatured trike like the triker here is that you get things like sensor swap built in. So, it means you can switch between torque and cadence sensor. You get UL certification across the entire bike. You get a very powerful rear motor which is going to capable of putting out somewhere close to 1300 watts. In our testing, this bike, this trike rather, struggled very little getting us up hills. You get a very nice seven-speed drivetrain, so you can really dial in the inclusion of a bell as well as a very, very loud horn. And then on the display here, you get all kinds of functionality built in. You get the adjustability of every pedal assist level. And Velri has also worked in the ability to use Apple Find My. So if you wanted to maybe add a uh ability for your phone to track where your bike is, it is built into this bike and ready to go. It does have some folding functionality. So maybe if you needed a little bit of help storing this in certain areas, you can simply fold down your handlebars here. And there is also a fold area right here in the middle of the frame so you can tuck the wheel off to the side. It doesn’t tuck away nicely. So it does not a super small platform like we’ve seen from maybe some other trikes, but it does fold up so it’s a little bit easier to store. Best way I’ve found to store one of these is simply fold the handlebars down and kind of maybe roll it underneath a cupboard or into a corner. It’s a little bit nicer to store with those fold down handlebars. Now probably one of the biggest selling points to me about the Velcri Triker is that it has a very robust total payload capacity. That is going to be 500 lb. You could utilize this thing to run all kinds of errands. You have a very nice robust rear basket and a very robust cargo capacity for maybe carrying you or anything you can throw at it. Now, some key considerations for the Velri triker is that storing a trike is not easy. Um, they do take up a bit more space. So, something to keep in mind. You do have have to have a place to store it. And they are not light as this Velri Triker tipped our scales at about 86 lb. So, you do have to really have a place maybe on a first level to store it as I can’t imagine anybody who has elected to ride a trike is going to be able to maybe carry this up. And then the other big elephant in the room is going to be the price. $23.99. It is not the most affordable trike on our list. We do have one more affordable option, but it is the most fullfeatured. It has all kinds of features and functionality baked into it. Is the ability to really grow with you as rider maybe as you get healthier. You can turn up and down some of those assist levels, but you are paying for some of those features and functionalities. at $23.99. Again, not the most affordable, but man, it is pretty with this bright candy red paint job. It is full featured with the inclusion of the rear basket, this nice seat, and that display. So, if this trike is not for you, simply based upon budget, wait till you see the next trike we have on our list. Next up, we have the Electric XP Trike 2. This is the second version of the trike from electric. And really, I think electric needs to be given a little bit of a nod because they were the first one to bring affordability to the trike market. That was with the XP trike, the first version, which Ryan and I were very impressed with. And now they have the electric XP trike 2. And now they even have the upgraded XP Trike 2, which has a larger motor, larger battery, but that one comes in a touch higher at $1,800. The XP Trike 2 that you see here comes in at $14.99. Now, for that $14.99, this is a complete package trike, but there are some compromises, especially when you compare it to the Velatri Triker, which is really a no compromised trike. That’s why we have assigned the accolade to the XP trike as the best budget trike. Now, even with the word budget in the accolade for this bike, it’s still fullfeatured. You get things like suspension, front fork, right headlight, tail light. You still get the locking brake levers. And I would argue that these are actually a bit better as they have these really nice blue levers that you twist back and forth. You simply lock them and pull it in. You can hear them ratchet to lock. Whereas on some of the other bikes, the E brake or park brake that we’ve seen, you do have to apply a bit more hand pressure. So maybe if you don’t have the capability of applying all that hand pressure, um it is nice to have these really nice twist ones here to engage and disengage that ratcheting mechanism. You get the inclusion of a bell, a twist grip throttle. Now, even though we assigned the word budget to the accolade for this trike, it doesn’t really skimp out on a lot of the key features and functionalities that we have appreciated from a number of other trikes. You still get the nice lower and upper back seat rest here. You get really nice adjustable handlebars here. these BMX style bars, you can twist them away. You have a very nice color LCD display. And then you still have a very powerful rear motor, which again is capable of carrying us up our hill climb test. Be sure to watch the full review on this trike if you want to see just how it did up our hill climb and how capable it can be. Now, the total payload capacity for this bike is about 440 lb with about 330 of that being right here in the cockpit area and the additional weight of that on the rear rack. There is purchasable accessories such as a rear basket and things like that if you want to maybe set this up to haul a little bit more cargo mount one up here in the front. But this trike is great out of the box is one thing that electric does very best is that their assembly system from getting out of the box to riding is very small. So we’ve done a number of videos assembling all their other bikes and the trike is no different. It is one of the easiest bikes to get out, like I said, out of the box and onto the road and riding once you charge your battery. Of course, electric is also very well known for us for having some of the best customer support. If you have any problems, reach out. There is physically somebody there on the other side of the line based in the US you can talk to to get customer support. I have seen their customer support lines of people on the phones dealing with customers day in and day out. Now, some things to consider before you pick up your own XP trike. Number one being that total payload capacity is not the highest at 330 lbs right here on the rider. So if maybe you’re a rider that requires a little bit uh more robustness in the cockpit area, you are going to have to look elsewhere. You do not have a drivetrain on this bike. So if you do have very steep hills in your area, you are maybe going to want to search for a trike that has the ability to shift. There is no sensor swap ability on this model. Although on the XP Trike 2 750 watt which you get a little bit larger of a motor, you also get a larger battery and a sensor swap functionality which is something new that electric has released on their trikes. And then another negative is similar to the Velri trier is going to be it is a heavy bike to transport. So transporting is not going to be the easiest as well as storing a trike is not always the easiest. Again, you do have folding functionality, so you can get it a little bit smaller. Maybe drop the handlebars, fold the wheel around a little bit, but it is still a large, heavy package overall. Now, out of all the trikes that we’ve ridden and tested here on the channel, the XP Trike 2 and the Velri Triker were amongst the top two trikes that we could recommend to you guys. What trikes did we miss? What trikes should we review on the channel next? Let us know in the comments down below. All right, next up, we have two bikes from Bellatri. That’s going to be because I could not pick just one model from them that I really think is fun to ride and really accessible for anyone out there. So, we have the Discover as well as the Breeze over here. Now, we do have a full breakdown comparison review between these two bikes posted on our channel. I’ll link that in the upper right hand corner. Now, if you’re just looking for a little bit of an overview and quickly decide whether these bikes are the ones you want to do more research on, this is the section for you. So, starting with the Breeze here, the Breeze is offered at $17.99 and comes in two frame sizes and has a multitude of really cool colorways. But you will notice it is more of an upright cruiser style bike, meaning it’s going to be a lot more pedal forward versus the Discover model here, which is offered at 1999 and is going to be more of a rear pedal feel. So, meaning it’s going to feel more like a traditional bike, whereas the Breeze is going to feel a little bit more like a beach cruiser. Now, these bikes have a lot more similarities than they quickly appear on the surface to have as there’s a lot of styling cues different similarities between these two bikes. They both come packed with tech features. They have over 15 levels of adjustability within the display. They both have sensor swap functionality built into them, meaning you can switch between a torque or a cadence sensor. They both have integration of Apple fine my meaning you can utilize that to keep track of your bike. And thanks to a lot of that tech integration into these bikes, they both have access to overtheair updates, meaning they can modify the firmware and change certain things about the bikes from when they first were released. And that is something that they’ve actually constantly been upgrading. That sensor swap functionality that I mentioned on both these bikes, that was not something that they came from the factory with. That was something they later released via a firmware. Just a quick word of warning, if you are not super tech-savvy, you may need to find that family member that is, or Velri, thanks to their dealer network, you may be able to take your bike into a local dealer and have that firmware flashed in. Now, let’s get into some specifics between the Breeze and the Discover to maybe help you pick between these two models. I just want to bring you in close so you can get an up close look at the Breeze versus the Discover. So, here is that good overview of the bike. The Breeze, like I said, has that more of a commuter relaxed seating position. definitely going to be more pedal forward. You will also notice this is a much more stripped down version of a bike versus the Discover. So whereas you don’t get things like a rear rack, fenders, or even a suspension front fork. Now that is to save a bit of weight. The Breeze tips our scales at under 50 lbs without the battery. Very impressive, especially if you’re going to be transporting the bike around. Very easy to get this bike on and off of bike racks. The battery nicely integrated into the frame. On the seat here, you may notice that it says comfort max. And that is going to be Velatrix version of comfort means you get a little bit softer seat. You get some nice ergonomic grips. You get an adjustable stem help you tune that cockpit to make it more comfortable for you. Get a 8-speed drivetrain and Tekro hydraulic disc brakes. And I was talking about the tech features before. You have these buttons over here on the left. Here’s a look at that display. We turn it on. Nice Velri welcoming you and boom, everything nice big color front and center. Get multiple different modes. You can change the torque sensor here. Lots of different data and things for you to play with on this display. Now, there are a lot of similarities in the cockpit here, the display, throttle, button layout as the Discover. The real differences show up in the overall frame design. See here, this frame looks a little bit stronger. You get those metal fenders. You get that rear rack. You get the same drivetrain and really I think even the same tires, but the other big resounding difference going to be up here in the front fork. Now you get a suspension front fork which is just going to help soak up some of those bumps. Now with those items having been added the rear back metal fenders and front fork, the overall weight of the Discover 2 is a little bit higher, making it not as easy to transport, but still not that bad overall. So really the biggest differentiator between these two bikes is if you would like some of the extra accessories that come on the Discover, pick the Discover. It is going to come with that slightly higher price tag. And if you don’t mind the weight, of course, but you’re looking for an easier bike to transport and maybe comes in at a lower overall weight and maybe you might add fenders and things like that in the future, the Breeze is a good option for you. But to be honest with you, between the Velri Breeze or the Discover, I would put my mother-in-law on either of those two. That’s why these were two very top contenders on the ebike that I helped her pick. All right, next up we have the most affordable electric bike on our list and only folding ebike on our list and that’s going to be the electric XP4. Like that name suggests, this is the fourth generation of this bike. They’ve continued to improve upon this model as well as the XP model was really electric’s flagship ebike and was their first ebike they made to get into that market. And thanks to this bike being on its fourth generation, it is packed with cool functions, features, and a lot of really just thoughtful, tasteful things that electric has put on and learned over the four generations of this ebike. The XP4 here is offered in two frame sizes. You have the step through like we see here. It’s also offered in a high-step version. It’s also offered in a couple different colorways as well as two different trim levels. The $9.99 version that you’re going to see on their website is offered with a 500 W motor and a 10 a hour battery. And for most people out there, that is going to be perfectly adequate. But if you’re looking to step it up a little bit, they also offer a 750 W motor as well as a slightly larger battery, but it does come with a slightly higher price tag as well at $1299. Now, one of the great things about folding ebikes that cannot be understated is their ability to fold and be stashed in maybe a corner or stored in the way that we like to store our folding ebikes, which is folded up and in a tub. And most recently, we started finding tubs with wheels. It makes transporting them a whole heck of a lot easier. So, if you’re somebody that’s maybe a little bit more space confined, you don’t have a big garage to store your bike in, you can fold these bikes up and maybe put them in a corner, take up a little bit less space, or if you’re somebody that lives in an RV or travels in an RV and you just don’t want to purchase a bike rack to transport your bikes around. Electric XP models are great for that. You can fold them up, throw them in a tub, throw them in the back of your RV, throw them in the back of your truck, maybe. Really offers a lot of versatility and allows you another way to transport yourself around an RV park or really anywhere you’re visiting. That’s where these bikes have really taken off. Anytime I travel and get anywhere near an RV park, I can guarantee I’m going to see electric ebikes, most notably the XP models. Now, I know what some of you out there are thinking, well, this bike checks a lot of boxes. Why wouldn’t I just pick up an XP4? Well, most notably is going to be the weight. The XP4 does come in a bit higher than some other ebikes on our list. And that’s going to be because of that folding functionality. They’ve had to reinforce the frame a bit to make it so it’s not going to buckle when you’re riding it. And because of that, the weight has increased. So, if you’re not somebody that needs the folding functionality, you can find lighter options out there. Now, one of the other things to consider is going to be the battery location on the XP4. It’s actually located in this tube here. And the way you get to that is by unfolding the bike and sliding the battery out. There is a charging port on the side over here that you can move out of the way and you can charge the battery on the bike. But, if you need to pull, say the battery out because you store your bike on the street or something of that nature, you will have to fold the bike to remove the battery. Now, while that is also a negative, something to consider about that is going to be a positive is that there’s no way you’re stealing this battery. You will have to break the frame open or know that it’s in there and unlock the pin to get the battery out to steal it. Not as easy as when the battery is mounted on the outside of the frame or right there on top. The last and probably biggest thing to consider about the XP4 is that it is only offered in one frame size. Now, that may leave you in a slightly less comfortable or if you were a bike rider, less familiar seating position, but thankfully Electric has you covered with their next model on our list, and that’s going to be with the Electric Express. Now, you will notice that this does look a lot more like your traditional bicycle as it just has more traditional bike geometry. But something you will notice is that the last person who rode this bike was very tall. It has adjustable handlebars. They’re very swept back, very easy to hop on and off thanks to that open step through frame. The seat also goes very high. So, if you are a taller or if you go all the way down a very short rider, there’s a lot of room for being fit on this bike, as well as a lot of room for it just feeling more traditional and more standard versus the XP4 model. Again, this is the electric express model. And the probably biggest thing about this bike when electric first announced it a couple years ago is that the pricing on this bike, this bike is also the most affordable electric bike on our list. That’s right. There are two $9.99 ebikes on our list. The Express here, similar to the XP4, the 500 watt version of this bike is offered at $9.99 and has the 10 A battery. Then you can spend up to $12.99 to get a 750 W motor and a slightly larger battery as well. And while there are two frame options, there’s this is the step through. There’s also a high-step version which only comes in black. The step through here only comes in this white. This is really a complete commuter ebike. You will not need to add anything to this bike to get on and ride. That is another big thing that I almost forgot to mention with the XP4 about electric is that they believe they are the mechanics and they are the ones that should do almost all of the assembly. So these bikes besides requiring a battery charge and in the case of the Express requiring the front wheel to be put on, they are ready to ride out of the box. Meaning you don’t have to install things like handlebars. You don’t have to do anything to the brakes. They are ready to go out of the box. Fantastic. They’ve been tuned. They’ve been adjusted. Simply charge that battery. throw it in and get out and ride. Now, what are some things that you should consider before you pick up your own Electric Express? Number one has to be the frame. It is still a one size fits most frame design. So, meaning they do include things like the adjustable stem and they have a lot of room here in the seat post to really dial in that minimum and maximum height. But just know that if you are on the lower higher end of the height recommendation on Leer’s website, it may be a bit funky getting on and off this bike. may not feel again as comfortable. Same problem we were running into on the XP4. And one other thing to keep in mind about all electric models before you purchase going to be that they all have pretty much switched to torque sensors. What that means is that it is a more natural pedal feel, but it means that you are going to be reminded that you’re riding a bike. So, it’s going to require a bit more effort to be put in before you can reach some of those higher speeds. Now, Electric has thought about this and they have a lot of adjustments and tunability you can get into the display and adjust to make the bike a lot easier to pedal, but you do have to be comfortable going into those display settings. Thankfully, we’ve also made a video that I will tag in the upper right hand corner now so you can quickly reference that video if maybe you want to see how in-depth or how involved you have to get into those display settings. But just know too, there are plenty of videos out there as well that are going to show you exactly what you need to know and adjust. And with Electric Express out of the way, that wraps up our list of ebike recommendations for seniors. What ebikes did we miss? What ebikes would you recommend to your mother-in-law?
