Petrol and diesel loses marketshare in Australia as Hybrid and Electric Car Sales Rise

After being called out for writing a completely false article with false stats saying the electric car sales in Australia are down this year versus last year, Car Expert has had to essentially issue an apology. Now to be honest, Car Expert seems to have a an agenda which is to disparage electric car sales. But um yeah, interestingly this new article comes after their pretty diabolical effort to slam EV sales in Australia falsely and all the commenters reported on the numbers being completely made up by a car expert and they’ve come out with this new story saying that actually Australia’s new car market is barely growing. But what is changing is that petrol and diesel vehicle sales are continuing to fall. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. Hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric car sales are actually accounting for now more than 30% of new light vehicle sales. Between January and November 2025, Australians bought one 1.1 million new passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles. This is up from about 10,000 less than that in the same period of 2024. The petrol share of the light vehicle market in Australia has fallen from 45% in 2024 to 40% in 2025. Diesel has eased off from 31.3% to 30.6% over the same period. Electrified drivetrains have filled the gap, says car expert. Now, surprisingly, diesel sales haven’t gone down that much in comparison to other places like Europe and many places around the world where diesel sales have completely collapsed. Electric cars have risen from 82,960 sales in the first 11 months of 2024 to 92,886 sales in the same period of 2025. EV market share has increased from 7.6 to 8.5%. Still not where you I would have thought it would be. What do you guys think? Plug-in hybrid sales and conventional hybrids are growing even faster now. Even though interestingly plug-in hybrid sales worldwide have barely changed this year in comparison to EVs which have increased substantially here in Australia it’s a different market. Over the same January to November period FEVs jumped from 20,631 to 47,565 sales an increase of 130%. Hybrids went from 158,000 to 180,000 up 14%. But isn’t it interesting, isn’t it, to see that EV sales are still around double that of plug-in hybrid sales in Australia. If you average if you ask the average Australian said to them, hey, do you think we’re selling more EVs or Australians Australians are buying more electric cars in Australia or more plug-in hybrids? Almost all of them would say the plug-in hybrids. The November 2025 snapshot underlines how quickly the change is happening. Vax recorded 93,000 deliveries of new passenger SUV and light commercial vehicles for brands that report to them in November. Tesla and Polestar added another 10 2,700 and 200 deliveries respectively, meaning EV sales hit 96,000. And that means electric car sales actually in November accounted for 9,081 units or 9.4% of the market. So nearly 1 in 10 vehicles sold in November were fully electric. Plug-in hybrid sales accounted for 5% of the market. Conventional hybrids were 19.7%. All up, that means that in November, 34% of the cars sold carried some form of electrification. To be honest, that’s a pretty low number in comparison to many countries around the world. But it does mean that that’s one in three or just over one in three vehicles were either hybrids or electric cars. According to EV cancel data, Tesla deliveries fell from 34,754 units to 26,271, which was a drop of 24.4%. And that means that Tesla sales accounted for 28% of all electric car sales so far this year. 28% is still a really good number, but it is a pretty big slide from Tesla’s 44% market share in 2024. Now, all of this means that petrol has lost 5 percentage points of market share. That said, what happened in January is very different to what happened in November here in Australia. And the Tesla Model Y was the bestselling car in November last month with 2,300 deliveries. In second place was the BYDC Lion with 1,040 deliveries. So about 40% the numbers of the Model Y. In third place was the Zika 7X with 682 deliveries. And in fourth the Tesla Model 3, followed by the Julie EX5. Then the Body Ato. The Kia EV5 was next. Build 3 was after the Kia EV5. MG’s S5 had 22 deliveries for seventh place, followed by the Build Seal in eighth place with 157 deliveries. The MG4 9th, 145, and the Build Dolphin in 10th with 103 sales. Let me know what you think about what’s happening here in Australia. Are you surprised as well like I am by the, you know, relatively slow rate of EV adoption here in this big country? Thanks for watching. Electric car sales here in Australia in the month of November. There was quite a good month. EV sales definitely bounced back here in Australia after a bit of an average month the previous month. The top 10. Let’s have a a look at the top 10 most popular or at least the highest selling EVs in Australia in November. And guys, I I have to give you my two cents on this because I own one of them and in I own now two EVs, which is kind of exciting. But I do think I’m a little bit baffled as to why people are buying some of the EVs on this list. I don’t know if it’s necessary because of the actual qualities of those cars. I think it’s more the brand name potentially. Hello my friends, welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. You’re watching the Electric Viking. Great to have you with us. The bestselling EV in Australia in November was the Tesla Model Y with 2,269 sales, which was more than double. The second place, BYD Cine 7 with 1,040 sales. In third place was the Zika 7X with 682 sales. The Tesla Model 3 was in fourth with 433. The Julie EX5 next with 412. The Body AT2, brand new model. I believe it’s the cheapest electric SUV in Australia that had 365 deliveries. The Kia EV5 300. Build ADO3 261. The MGS5 22. Body Seal 157, MG45, and the BOD Dolphin 103. of these cars, which ones do I think make the most sense um and would be cars that I personally would consider buying if I was looking for a car in that segment. First of all, the Tesla Model Y, would I consider buying one of those? Yes, I absolutely would. Um, do I particularly like Tesla, like the parent company? You know, honestly, not really. But hey, this is not about an opinion. I’m not a I’m not making videos here to kind of put out political opinions. I’m just talking about cars and the Model Y is a great car. 2270 sales and I think all those people bought a a good car. The Zika 7X I’m going to skip the Cine 7. The Zika 7X is I own one now. I’ve had it for a few day. I’ve had it for nearly a week.

Petrol and diesel vehicles are rapidly losing market share in Australia as hybrid and electric car sales continue to climb. Rising fuel costs, improved EV choices, and government incentives are accelerating the shift toward electrified vehicles across the country.
