We Tested Nissan’s New e-Power Serial Hybrid | Here’s What It Means For The Next Rogue Hybrid
This is the Nissan Qashqai, and it used to live in the US as the Rogue Sport, but not anymore. So, why are we looking at it? The answer’s found here under the hood. This is the Nissan E- Power Hybrid system, which is found overseas, but will make its way here to the US in the 2027 Nissan Rogue. This won’t be exactly what we see under the hood of the Rogue, but there will be a lot of similarities, including the fact that it’s a serial hybrid, which means no matter what speed you’re driving, that engine, the 1.5 L turbo, is never actually powering the wheels. It goes to a generator through the electric motor and that’s where you get your propulsion. In this case, they got this Qashqai 0 to 60 in just under 7 seconds. And Nissan says that we should get more power and more interestingly all-wheel drive. This is front-wheel drive only. They’ll be adding a motor here to the rear. And I expect while this is under 200, we should be seeing at or just above that when it comes to the US. Serial hybrids are great for a consistent feel because it’s always electric propulsion. It’s very much like an EV driving experience. But one of the downsides is efficiency. It’s not as important when you get to the city, but when it comes to highway driving, that’s why there are very few serial hybrids at all out in existence. There are many that operate mostly as a serial, but can switch into parallel mode, where that engine will connect and link up with the wheels. That way, you get more efficiency. But Nissan’s done their homework and says they’re happy with the tuning where it’s at right now, and that’s why it’s finally making its way here to the US. What they’re aiming for is about 40 m per gallon, and that’s a huge bump over the standard Rogue. And it comes exclusively in all-wheel drive, which is even more impressive when you look at the comparison. I’d love to see this system go headto-head against something like a Honda CRV hybrid, which is a mostly serial system in its own right, but it can connect to get better fuel efficiency when you’re at things like highway speeds. But stay tuned for more coverage on the 2027 Nissan Rogue as we get more
