Germany has announced the return of subsidies for purchases of electric cars and plug-in hybrids, a move tied to sliding EV sales after the program was scrapped in 2023. The new support scheme will take effect in 2026 and is aimed at reviving the domestic market, which in turn influences the EU’s overall CO2 emissions.According to ADAC, households earning up to 80,000 euros will be eligible for at least 3,000 euros when buying a new electric vehicle. The income threshold rises by 5,000 euros for each child, while the incentive itself increases by 500 euros for the first two children. The maximum payment reaches 4,000 euros and will be available at incomes up to 90,000 euros. The subsidy also applies to leases, provided the car is registered in Germany from the outset and remains with the holder for the stipulated period. In parallel, a support program for PHEVs is being prepared, making budget-friendly hybrids more appealing to buyers. The structure of these incentives points to a targeted approach rather than blanket rebates—enough to nudge hesitant shoppers while keeping market signals intact. If implemented cleanly, it could stabilize demand and give the transition to electrified models a steadier footing.
