I’d pick the Mitsubishi Orion (4G1 series) not very known, but it powered tons of Mitsubishis, Malaysian cars (only Proton), and a bunch of early Chinese models.
It’s simple, reliable, and pretty much everywhere in early-2000s Chinese and Malaysian cars.
