SUVs are the lifeblood of the U.S. auto market; we’ve got one for every occasion. There are compact SUVs to zip around town in, full-sized luxury SUVs for all your plush needs, proper mud-munching SUVs, and super SUVs for those of you who need the extra room and unbelievable power. However, as most SUVs are not exactly small or light, it is not always easy to balance good fuel consumption with rugged usability.

This is where plug-in SUVs could be handy. If you are not quite ready to go fully electric but still want a high combined gas and electric range, impressive power, and good available MPG ratings, they can be a sensible buy. We are taking a look at the plug-in SUVs with the highest gas tank range you can buy in 2025.

The models on this list have been researched extensively, and all data provided is accurate as of the time and date of publishing. Models are listed in ascending order from least to most fuel efficient.

With a combined gas and electric tank range of 430 miles, this year’s Kia Sportage PHEV combines low starting costs, low fueling costs, a decent maximum range, and a lot of versatility for its price bracket; buying a plug-in Sportage just makes sense. There are two 2025 Kia Sportage PHEV models: the X-Line, which has a starting price of $39,890, and the X-Line Prestige, which has an MSRP of $44,390. You get a dual-level floor cargo behind both the first and second row of seating, and a maximum cargo capacity of 65.5 cubic feet, while a decent towing capacity (when properly equipped) of 2,000 pounds means that not only do you get a long tank range and decent fuel costs, but you also get a handy compact SUV that can handle weekend trips to the lake.

The EPA estimates that the 2025 Range Rover Sport PHEV can achieve 470 miles on a single tank of gas, taking into consideration gas and electric motivation. Starting prices for this year’s Range Rover Sport PHEV are around $97,000 for the P460e Dynamic SE and $156,850 for the P550e Autobiography; both are short-wheelbase models and blend luxury with sporty SUV feels. Gas-only combined mpg ratings (19 mpg) are not what you’d call frugal, nor are estimated yearly fuel costs, but thanks to the 454-horsepower plug-in hybrid 3.0-liter bi-turbocharged inline-six under the hood of the Dynamic SE and the 543-horsepower unit in the Autobiography, both churning out a decent amount of power and still able to achieve a Land Rover-estimated 53 miles in all-electric mode, this year’s Range Rover Sport PHEV does offer both a lot of city-friendly driving and some good off-road guts.

The 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e has a starting price just south of $75,000. A full tank of gas can get you 503 miles of driving; the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six kicks out an impressive 483 horsepower; you get from rest to 60 in 3.9 seconds; the interior is luxe; you get all-wheel drive as standard, and the typical BMW X5 aggressive design cues give it a heck of a presence on the road. Owners who have left a review on J.D. Power have given this year’s X5 a very respectable rating of 80 out of 100, and we can certainly see why. FuelEconomy.gov says that it will cost you $72 to fill the X5’s 18.2-gallon fuel tank, and that it can offer you up to 39 miles of all-electric power around crawling roads. All in all, combining style, precision, luxury, and not-so-terrible fuel consumption, the 2025 BMW X5 ticks a lot of boxes.

This year’s Mazda CX-90 PHEV is available in three well-equipped trims: the Preferred, the Premium Sport, and the Premium Plus, with starting prices ranging from $51,475 to $59,480. So, right from the off, it is reasonably well-priced. Under the hood is a 323-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-four mated to a 68 kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery pack, which, combined with the eight-speed auto box, can get you to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and gives you an all-electric range of 25 miles from a full charge. Ideal for highway-joining sprints. You get all-wheel drive as standard, and with a maximum estimated gas tank range of 536 miles, you get a lot of easy, everyday driving bang for your buck. As standard, the 2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV comes equipped with a sleek cabin, even at base trim. If you want the most luxe experience, though, the Premium Plus flaunts Nappa leather, optional second-row captain’s chairs, and fabric dash upholstery. For its price point, this year’s Mazda CX-90 PHEV should be seen as a real threat to the more expensive plug-in SUV market.

Combining sensible luxury, a refined and comfortable cabin, and a maximum gas tank range of 530 miles, the 2025 Volvo XC90 T8 (the PHEV model) is well worth a look if you just want everything to work in a subtle but plush fashion. Considering the Volvo XC90 T8 has a curb weight of approximately 5,122 pounds, all-wheel drive fitted as standard, and a 455-horsepower turbocharged inline-four mated to the plug-in system under the hood (Volvo’s ‘Twin-Engine’ tech), combined mpg ratings of 58 MPGe are not to be sniffed at. FuelEconomy.gov says that the Volvo T8 can be driven up to 32 miles on all-electric power only; it will cost you $75 to fill the 18.8-gallon gas tank, and a lowly $2.12 to drive 25 miles on a single charge. Starting prices may be relatively high at just shy of $75,000, but you do get a lot of luxuries, respectable fueling costs, oodles of space inside, and a very refined build all around.

“The T8 plug-in hybrid has the benefit of an e-motor on the rear axle, capable of getting the XC90 to highway speeds and beyond without using a drop of gas, minimizing the load on the internal combustion engine and sparing occupants from enduring the gravelly tones of the four-pot under duress.”

With a starting price of $42,145 and a low estimated yearly fuel cost of $1,350, this year’s Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV brings affordable costs, versatility, and high reliability rates to the plug-in SUV market. Three rows of seating come equipped as standard, making the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV one of the cheapest three-row plug-in hybrid SUVs in 2025. Combined mpg ratings are impressive at 64 MPGe; you get an estimated 38-mile electric-only range per full charge, and the total electric/gas range tops out at 420 miles. The Outlander PHEV is powered by a 2.4-liter inline-four mated to two electric motors, which combined, shift out 248 horsepower. This may not sound like raucous numbers, but you can still get to 60 mph in a respectable 6.6 seconds, so joining the highway won’t be a struggle. You also get a maximum cargo capacity of 64.7 cubic feet with all the seats folded away, giving the Outlander PHEV a jack-of-all-trades edge in the market.

Boasting a whopping gas tank range of 550 miles, the 2025 Kia Sorento PHEV is one of the top choices for long trips this year. That 550 miles include a 31-mile all-electric range, and low fueling costs, courtesy of the 12.3-gallon fuel tank. Without electric motivation, the Kia Sorento PHEV can achieve up to 33 combined mpg, so either way you look at it, it does well for fuel. There are two trims available: the Sorento EX PHEV and the higher-spec Sorento SX Prestige PHEV, and both come equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four mated to an electric motor, which combined kicks up 261 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. This translates to 0–60 mph times in 7.8 seconds and a maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, so for the lower starting cost, impressive fuel consumption, and crisp-looking build, it is a lot of frugal SUV driving for your cash.

“I say this because the 2025 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid SX Prestige isn’t exactly slow, but it can’t realistically be characterized as fast either. It’s adequate. I clocked four consecutive two-way 0-60s in just under eight ticks. According to the folks at Kia, the PHEV Sorento is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.”

The engine under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four mated to a motor that, combined, can shift out 268 horsepower. In typical Lexus fashion, this year’s Lexus NX 450h+ brings dependability, frugal driving, an upscale cabin, and good value retention to the plug-in market. RepairPal says it will cost you a lowly $551 a year for maintenance; Car Edge says that the NX will lose, on average, 44% of its value in the first five years, and FuelEconomy.gov says that a fully-charged battery and full gas tank can get you 550 miles. The Lexus NX 450h+ has an all-electric range of 37 miles, and you could save up to $2,250 on gas over five years compared to the average modern vehicle. Alongside all the potential wallet-saving credentials, the 2025 NX 450h+ is well-equipped for its reasonable starting price of just over $62,000; this gets you genuine leather upholstery, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 9.8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen, and the Lexus Safety System 3.0. You are well covered across a huge range of what we want from a fuel-efficient luxury SUV.
