I am amazed at the comments shared about e-bikes traveling at such high speeds (35-60 mph?). At these speeds, they sound more like electric scooters, not bikes. Add in an account that the riders weren’t wearing helmets. This is Darwinian theater at its peak. Cyclists with experience can attest that there is danger riding any bike. My wife and I have transitioned from traditional bikes to e-bikes, but our peak speeds are 20-25, maybe sometimes 30 kph (12-18 mph). Caution around cars and giving way to pedestrians is paramount for the safest possible outcomes. Even given that, my wife hit a rock and had a terrible (bone breaking) crash. Thank God for her helmet which is one piece of equipment I insisted we wear when we became regular cyclists after moving to a small town (along with gloves). Prohibition doesn’t seem like a logical response, but clear enforceable and punitive traffic laws are a must.
