Ever wondered how EV car sound design works? | Tech Explained
I still love playing with cars and creating the noises they make, but these days electric cars are kind of quiet, right? That’s why Mercedes-Benz has invented a whole new galaxy of immersive sound experiences. I’m Rob. I’m your tech explainer and this is Tech Explainer. Previously, cars made one sound from the engine and exhaust, but in our electric cars, you can choose from six immersive sound worlds. Let me show you Roaring Pulse. Wo, nice. This means you’re shaping the sounds that you hear. What you do affects the sounds in the car. Every sound inside the CLA is programmed. It’s designed to react to how I drive. Now, you might think that these sounds are created in a normal music studio, but that’s not how Mercedes-Benz does things. Let me explain. All sound is basically vibration. Now, this bouncing is called modulation. In the car, I adjust it with the accelerator and the brake. Our sound engineers can play around with all of this to make sounds that are more gritty, more chilled out, or add special effects like crickets in the ground or the sound of rustling trees or oh, birds flying overhead. These are just a few examples. When we zoom out, we have a whole symphony of sounds to play with. Driving one of these cars makes you feel like your favorite rock star. And after so much theory, let’s get back to the track. It’s not a dial that adjusts the sound and the volume in this car. It’s how you drive, your acceleration, how fast you’re going, and even how quickly you put on the brakes. Finally, let me take you on a tour through some of our sound worlds. Silver Waves is more subtle. It’s more for everyday background driving, like the incidental music for your life. Let’s try another one. Now, serene breeze is perfect for longer autobon journeys. It builds as you drive faster. And then when I slow down, oh, rustling trees, birds. I’m in nature. Granular fuzz. Wow. It feels like I’m on an adventure. I got guitars. Tony.
