Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand, has made leaps and bounds in the 10 years since its creation. Its origins lie in a 2003 concept car, the first to use the Genesis name, and later a production model, the Hyundai Genesis, introduced in 2008. Eventually, the Genesis brand became strong enough to evolve into a standalone entity. The company has expanded its lineup with new models, built itself an image of high quality and comfort, and even started its own racing team last year.
One particular model in the Genesis lineup stands out among the others: the GV60, an electric crossover that shares a platform with several other models from the Hyundai Group. The GV60 is the only Genesis model to share major components with a Hyundai; the GV60 Magma, its recently-introduced performance variant, is essentially Genesis’ take on Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N.
The GV60 has only been around for four years, and has an exciting future ahead of it. With the Magma version ushering in a new era for the brand – and an electric architecture that showcases the Hyundai Group’s technological capabilities – it is one of the most interesting models in the Genesis lineup. Let’s take a closer look at it.

The Genesis GV60: An Overview

The Genesis GV60 is an electric crossover SUV, first introduced in 2021. It went on sale in North America for the 2023 model year. It fits into the Genesis lineup just below its crossover sibling, the GV70. The GV60 is also the first Genesis model to introduce a new version of the brand’s emblem, representing a step forward in Genesis’ design journey.
One of the most notable characteristics of the GV60 is the fact that it’s the brand’s first model to be built on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform was created specifically for electric vehicles, and is also used in other members of the Hyundai family such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.

The GV60 offers four different trim levels for 2025: one single-motor “Standard” RWD version and three different dual-motor AWD versions (the Standard, Advanced, and Performance). Power outputs range from 225 hp for the entry-level trim, to 429 hp for the Performance AWD model.

The lineup is slightly more expensive than before, but Genesis has made notable improvements to its electric crossover.
The model is equipped with a number of advanced tech features, such as a digital key which enables the driver to use their smartphone to unlock the car and start the engine. There is also a “Face Connect” facial recognition feature, which allows the driver to control functions such as the seat, steering wheel, and mirror adjustment once the vehicle has recognized their face.
The GV60 is undergoing a facelift, with a refreshed design and a brand new member of the lineup (the performance-oriented GV60 Magma). As the North American market had already received a slightly updated version of the model for the 2025 model year, the facelifted model is likely to go on sale for 2026.

The latest addition to the GV60 family is a very exciting one indeed: built with performance in mind, the GV60 Magma is the first Genesis member to carry the new Magma nameplate. This name is also used for the brand’s recently created motorsport team, indicating that its primary focus is performance. The GV60 Magma certainly reinforces that idea, with a host of features that make it faster and more enjoyable to drive. It has also been spotted testing at the Nürburgring before its introduction, which gives us an idea of what direction Genesis wants to go with this model.
This model is essentially a Genesis counterpart to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and shares several of its mechanical features. Like the Ioniq 5 N, it has a dual-motor, AWD setup; the two electric motors produce the same combined output of 641 hp, propelling the vehicle to 60 mph in less than three and a half seconds. Top speed is just 2 mph above that of the Ioniq 5 N, which reaches a maximum of 162 mph.

Powertrain isn’t the only impressive area of the GV60 Magma: its design also reflects its character, with a lower ride height, fender flares, and forged 21-inch wheels. The front and rear bumpers and the grille have also been given a refresh. The GV60 Magma is equipped with a functional front spoiler and rear wing, which help keep it planted to the ground with additional downforce.

The interior is just as sporty as the exterior, with faux suede upholstery decorated with orange and gray contrast stitching. Interior trim is available in a gloss black or dark metallic finish. There is also a smattering of orange in the form of the drive mode and boost buttons, which echo the stitching and the signature “Magma Orange” paint job.
The GV60 Magma is a long-awaited performance model for Genesis, and one that is ushering in what will hopefully be a successful new division in the vein of Hyundai’s N.
The GV60’s Relatives In The Hyundai/Kia Family

The version of the E-GMP the Genesis GV60 is built on is also shared by several other models in the Hyundai Group. These include some models from the Hyundai brand itself, and some Kia models.
On the Hyundai side of the family, the Genesis GV60 has common elements with the Ioniq 5, 6, and 9. All three are part of Hyundai’s Ioniq EV sub-brand, introduced to separate Hyundai’s electric lineup and give it a unique image.
The Ioniq 5 is a compact crossover SUV released for the 2022 model year; it was the first vehicle to be marketed under the Ioniq brand. The Ioniq 6, a mid-size fastback sedan, arrived the following year. In late 2024, the Ioniq 9, a three-row mid-size crossover and the third Ioniq vehicle, was introduced for the 2026 model year. The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 both have high-performance N versions as part of their lineup, while the Ioniq 9 does not.

For the Kia brand, meanwhile, the GV60’s closest relatives are the EV6 and the EV9. The EV6 compact crossover is Kia’s first dedicated electric vehicle; it made its debut in 2021 for the 2022 model year. The EV9, on the other hand, is a mid-size crossover which went on sale for the 2024 model year. It is the second model in Kia’s “EV” range.
The Key To The GV60: The Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform

Hyundai E-GMP.S platformHyundai
The use of the E-GMP is what makes the GV60 so unique in the Genesis lineup; being the first model by the luxury sub-brand to make use of this platform, the GV60 is a pioneer for the brand’s electrification strategy, and brings it in line with other members of the Hyundai Group.
The E-GMP was introduced in 2021. It is a successor to an earlier, but similar, Hyundai concept, the “Power Electric System”, which included an EV’s motor, battery, and electronics. The PE system initially used a separate motor and inverter, connected by a cable; the second generation of the system integrated the motor and inverter in a single unit, with no cables or connectors. The third generation of the PE system was the one that eventually became the E-GMP; more advanced and more compact, it integrated motor, transmission, and inverter into a single unit.

Hyundai confirmed it was working on a dedicated platform for EVs in 2017, but it wasn’t until four years later that the E-GMP made its debut in its present form. The E-GMP is available in multiple architectures (800 V and 400 V) and motor layouts (including front-motor, rear-motor, and dual-motor).

The platform is currently used in a total of nine Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia models. The Hyundai Group has plans to introduce 23 battery electric vehicles based on the E-GMP, including 11 exclusively electric vehicles.
The GV60 is bringing the Genesis brand into the future and pushing forward its electrification strategy. Alongside its Magma sibling, which has opened up a new world of performance for Genesis, it represents everything we have to look forward to regarding the brand’s next few years.
