Yuki Tsunoda Masters the Art of Drifting with James Deane | Ford Racing

What’s up everyone? Fivetime former drift champion James Dean here. James the Machine Dean. James the Machine Dean gets the win. Beauty Cenot’s currently on the way. We got the Ford Mustang Dark Horse behind me. And we also with over 1,000 horsepower and my Ford Mustang RTR. Super excited to bring him through some of the basic steps of drifting. Let’s get stuck in. [Music] Wow. Good to meet you. You’ve experienced the super van. You’ve experienced some off-road in the Raptor and today we’re going to be doing some drifting in the Ford Mustang Darkhorse. So, have you ever tried anything like this before? Never. Never. Never. Recent days in Formula 1 is actually doing opposite things. Yeah. Very opposite. So, yeah, definitely. I’m looking forward to it. Excellent. I think we’ll just get started, get stuck in, and have some fun. You ready? Oh, yeah. You’re trusting me? You’re an F1 driver. Why would I not trust you? Oh, yeah. I love it. You got it. You got it already. I didn’t even tell you what to do and you just started playing. All right, we’ll just start with the 180. So, there’s like three steps. So, I want you clutch, handbrake, hold the handbrake for like a second to like extend the slide in. Y and then once you feel like you’re almost quarter to 1/3 of the way around the first boxes, release the clutch and just get back on the power and full power back this way. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. No. Little bit too much speed. Oh, no. Oh, yeah. If you can meet in the middle of those two, you’re sorted. Yeah. All right, we’ll do it one more time. The next time you nail it, right? I know. Hard. Nice. Oh, that was good. Yeah, that was smooth. when you do like drifting laser like it’s the competition side mainly or or like events accommodation side. So like I do eight competitions in the US, another seven in Europe, some in the Middle East and then we do demos as well like stuff like Goodwood Festival speed and drifting up the hill there. [Music] It’s a busy season too but not quite F1 level. Okay. So, here now, very similar approach. You want to go 180 around one opponent boxes, then through the center, 180 around the other. And then you’re just trying to get as many attempts between the two obstacles while keeping it in drift. Nice. Nice. Perfect. Yeah. Yeah. So, same thing, right? Just a little bit more power when you’re doing it. You have the right idea. Use the handbrake to settle the car as you transition. In a bit tighter. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Remember the clutch. Yep. Oh, keep it going. Clutch. [Applause] That’s really good, man. Thank for your first attempt. I love it. The aura lead is like wow. Oh yeah. Clutch. Yeah, you’re good. You’re good. If you feel like you’re spinning out, you can just push the clutch and that will stop the drive to the rear tires. It’ll buy you a little bit of time before it spins out. [Applause] Perfect. Yes. Yes. Perfect. That was awesome. So good. Awesome. I’m well impressed, man. Well impressed. Oh, this is so fun. But like I need to calm down a little bit. I know when you reset and think about it all again, you’re you’re fine. But like I forgot to breathe actually. Really? So I’m actually holding my breathe all the time. Can’t believe this come like came out. Literally just stock. Yeah, stock. Put drift brake on. Turn traction control off. So cool. You’re having fun. Rabbit wise. Very good. They’re really fun toy. Oh, maybe next car purchase. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, what is this now? All right. So, this is challenging and you’re you’re going to be on the handbrake, initiate, and then you’re trying to follow the wall of cones all the way around and then you have your oil line on the cones and you’re kind of trying to take a guess of where the back of the car is. It’s a bit challenging, but very challenging. Yeah. But for you, baby, it’s easy. It’s fun. hammer. Oh, that was a very good first attempt. I love your some Japanese DNA. Yeah. Yeah. I love them right now. Go for it. Yeah. Wider, wider, wider. [Music] Keep going. It’s not champ right now. Power. Oh, yes. Yes. Woo. You didn’t even touch them. That was Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Keep it going. Keep it going. [Music] You got it, man. You’ve learned so much. Excellent. Excellent. [Music] All right, pull over here. Pull over here. Not much fun was that. That must have been this close at the end. Yeah, you know you’re from Japan, man. It’s in your DNA. That was clean. Oh, this is so fun. Thank you. You’re a legend. Thank you, man. Oh my god. He killed it. A total natural. Good, coach. Awesome. Thanks. How much fun was that? Very fun. Very fun. Like I forgot how fun play around with the drifting, you know, sliding. I was really impressed with how quick you learned and just got into it. And you were very good at listening, too. What was the most enjoyable part for you? Like the war run. War run. Obviously you guys are using actual concrete wall. Are we going to have Victor James nasty initiation? Luckily I didn’t use that today but um yeah that was most fun. Yeah. Next time for sure. So we do have one surprise left. Oh which that I didn’t know. If you wait here I’m going to go for a little walk. Might take this with me. Oh my god. [Music] Holy moly, that’s insane. Wow, the sound. Yeah, it’s a bit louder. Holy moly. So, this is is your car. Yeah, my Ford Mustang RTR accommodation car for Drift Masters in Europe. Amazing. Um, it has like 1100 brake horsepower. It’s on semi slick tires, so quite a lot of grip. It’s fully set up for drifting. That’s a real camber right there in the front. A lot of camber. Yeah. Yeah. So, when you’re on full lock, there’s a lot of steering angle in these cars. You want your outside tire to be as flat as possible to have as much grip. But it’s pretty wild and intense. We are going to give you an experience drifting away with this car. You’ll be in the passenger seat this time. Unfortunately, if you can reach the pedals, you can drive it. I’ll make that deal. I’m happy the passenger actually. I can’t wait. I can’t wait. Have some fun. So, sequential transmission. Then I have my hydraulic handbrake here. Nice. So, all my tools very close, easy to work with. I like sequential. The feeling of this amazing. Oh, this will be fun. [Music] Woohoo! [Music] Wow! [Music] Woohoo! Not bad. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] That’s it. Good. Yep. Good. [Music] [Music] Oh my god, you’re crazy. Crazy. Oh, such a good car. Wow. Fast. Hey, I didn’t know what was going on. I I just lose the direction which I’m which I’m which I’m facing at. Like am I facing to the wall now or Holy I sweat more than the yesterday’s race. But it’s so quick. I know. I know. Were you nervous? I was like I was Oh my god. How were you nervous? You just F1 yesterday. I I I lose the direction at some point and that’s 360 there. Yeah. Holy I got dizzy a little bit there. Oh my god. I enjoyed that. It’s insane. This guy is so nice. And now you know the basics from what you did in the dark horse to what it’s like in a full-on pro car. Yeah. The experience is things I I’ve been that passage. I never done it. I never had this kind of experience. So that was really really cool. Sick. We managed to fit in a lot of fun. Definitely. Definitely. Good times. You need to try a pro car someday. I won’t. I I don’t think so. I don’t I think I want to stay safe. So, pleasure, man. Thank you. Cheers. [Music]

Five-time Formula Drift Champion, James Deane, takes Oracle Red Bull Racing driver, Yuki Tsunoda, through a drift driving masterclass. In this unique challenge, two worlds collide: the precision and focus of F1 driving versus the balance and instinct of drifting.

What happens when a driver trained to shave milliseconds off a lap learns to embrace the art of oversteer?
