The RAV4 is not just Toyota’s most popular model, but it’s also one of the most popular vehicles in the United States. After setting sales records and claiming the podium throughout the model’s fifth generation, the new sixth-gen RAV4 changes the compact SUV’s styling, powertrains, and pricing. Toyota is removing the gas-only variant entirely, making the hybrid and plug-in choices the only available options. There are still plenty of trims to choose from with each mill. It’s not too surprising, though, when you consider how the Camry is an all-hybrid lineup, too. Toyota is currently the only brand to offer a hybrid-only lineup for the compact crossover SUV, but the RAV4’s direct rivals all have their own hybrid variants. In this article, we check out how the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid compares against the main hybrid rivals.

The Toyota RAV4 is all-new for its sixth generation, starting with the 2026 model year. This model is the best-selling Toyota by a long shot, beating even the Tesla Model Y in sales. The nameplate took the crown for the best-selling car in the country last year. For the new version, the RAV4 is both more expensive and cheaper simultaneously. The base model is the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid LE with FWD for $31,900. That’s technically more expensive than the outgoing base model, but only because the cheapest 2025 RAV4 had a gas engine that started at $29,800. The least expensive hybrid model for 2025 is the Hybrid LE, which starts at $32,850. When you only look at the previous hybrid models, the new generation technically has a lower starting price than the cheapest hybrid RAV4 from the 2025 model year.

The most expensive standard hybrid for the 2025 model year is the Hybrid Limited for $41,155 before destination, options, and fees, while the top-of-the-line 2026 RAV4 Hybrid Limited starts at $43,300. Toyota wants to make the range more accessible near the bottom of the lineup, but makes those dollars up at the high end. As for the plug-in hybrid variants, the 2026 model year starts with only two trims. The SE starts at $44,815 and the XSE starts at $48,685, which means there’s no increase in price over the 2025 model year PHEVs.

An all-new RAV4 is on the horizon, and Toyota will have to get it right to keep its best-selling title.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Competition

The RAV4’s Top Three Rivals

The compact crossover SUV segment is full of some of the most competitive and best-selling models from some of the most popular brands in America. There are plenty of competitors to the gas RAV4, such as the Mazda CX-50, the standard Honda CR-V, and others. Since Toyota is eliminating the gas-only versions of the RAV4 for the 2026 model year, we wanted to keep our comparisons in line with that; only the main rivals with hybrid trims were considered for this article. That doesn’t mean these are the only RAV4 competitors, but we think these three options make the most sense to show how the new Toyota SUV has changed. Here’s how the main RAV4 rivals compare in terms of price:

$35,630–$42,250

The Honda CR-V retains a few gas-only trims for the 2026 model year, but we only included the hybrid version’s price range in the chart above. While the true base price for a 2026 CR-V is $30,920, you can’t get your hands on a hybrid powertrain until spending enough for the Sport Hybrid trim, which starts at $35,630 before destination. You might be inclined to buy a new RAV4 for its Woodland Edition outdoorsy trim level, but the CR-V is available with a hybrid powertrain with the Trailsport trim.

Hyundai offers its Tucson model in gas, hybrid, and PHEV variants, but let’s focus on the regular hybrid version today. With that being said, it’s possibly the closest rival in price to the RAV4, since it starts at $32,200, and the most expensive trim level starts at $41,825. There are four trims to choose from, including the Blue SE, SEL, SEL Convenience, and Limited.

2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid Pricing

Built on the same platform as the Tucson, the Kia Sportage is another compact crossover SUV with gas-onlyand hybrid models. The 2026 model year has a refreshed plug-in hybrid version that will start at $900 more than last year. As for the standard hybrid, you can buy an electrically-assisted Sportage in any of five trims. The offerings include the LX for $30,290, the S, the EX, the X-Line, and the SX Prestige at the top of the lineup for $40,390.

The RAV4’s hybrid powertrain isn’t actually changing much for the new generation. All trim levels of the standard hybrid variant feature a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid setup that makes either 226 hp in front-wheel-drive trims or 236 hp in all-wheel-drive trims. The exact combined torque specifications have not been specified, but the engine itself is set for 163 lb-ft. Regardless of trim level or drivetrain, all standard hybrids come with an electronically controlled CVT.

Our three main rivals up for comparison today have similar specs. Starting with the Honda CR-V, which has a few hybrid trims – all powered by the same 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder hybrid system. It makes fewer horsepower, but our test drive of the current generation shows how it still feels quick enough for modern traffic. The Tucson and Sportage share a platform and some powertrains. The Sportage is listed as having a single unit more horsepower, although they both feel about the same on the road.

“Ride comfort is decent in all trims, and feels like a noticeable improvement over the outgoing generation. We wouldn’t call the steering particularly sporty, but it’s decently playful enough to not be vague or worrisome. Things change a bit with the GR Sport, which gets some performance and handling enhancements from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing Company. These include Dunlop Sportmaxx summer performance tires, performance damper turning, and unique steering mapping.”

As far as fuel economy goes, the 2026 RAV4 varies from trim to trim and has some FWD options. To keep things simple, we’re only comparing the mid-range trim levels of each model for this article. The SE AWD trim of the RAV4 achieves an extremely respectable 45/39/42 mpg. Its FWD counterpart does slightly better, with a little better MPG in each category. The CR-V Sport Hybrid trim is available in both FWD and AWD, but neither beats the Toyota’s fuel economy. On the low end of hybrid fuel economy is the Tucson SEL and Sportage S. These trims are close to one another, but fall short of rivals’ efficiency.

Summary: There’s Tough Competition From All Sides

Does the New RAV4 Stand Its Ground?

The new generation of the Toyota RAV4 is a decisive decision to remove gas-only powertrains from the lineup. That might anger some people, but will it be enough to lose the model’s superior sales? Only time will tell. It’s slightly more expensive than some rivals, while its base trim undercuts the outgoing hybrid RAV4. If you’re in the market for a new hybrid compact crossover SUV, we would wait until you can take this Toyota for a test drive. All rivals have their pros and cons, but Toyota makes a solid case for itself.
