Ford Capri (EV) – It Should Be Poor, At Best!
The Volkswagen Capri, sorry, the Ford Capri. You’ve probably seen this on the road. It’s been around a while. And yes, underneath it’s essentially sharing the same underpinnings as the Volkswagen ID4/ID5. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The only real criticism we had of that was the interior quality and it was just a bit bland, but it was practical and solid and it was a decent ride. Because they were, should we say, later to the party in the EV world, they’ve had to work together with Volkswagen. Again, I’d prefer Ford to do it themselves to see what they could achieve, but this is a good start. And their take on a decent platform is quite interesting. In terms of looks, I prefer the ID4 and five. It’s like it’s almost like a child has been asked to draw a car and this is what they’ve done. You like fill in the colors. It’s not bad. It’s just very smooth. There’s no features. That’s that’s the word I’m looking for. There’s no features to it. They’ve had to give it this color to make it stand out. So, so far, I have to say that Ford haven’t improved on anything. Volkswagen have done. It’s got the same dimensions pretty much as the ID45, which you’d expect. Um, and again, nothing much to shout about. I guess it’s a a practical car, and that’s what we should concentrate on. But other than a bit of black highlighting, I mean, I guess you’ve got this bit here. This coupe-esness will take an SUV, a practical car shape, and make it less practical. So, it’s a bit of a weird one, but that could be just me being me being me, me being mooney, and the fact it’s windy and raining. I’m not happy. I’m not happy, Harry. This is its best angle. And it’s still not really doing much for me if I’m honest. You got this big bar at the back. Fine. A big Ford badge. And again, no real features to talk about. I mean, look, there’s there’s a reflector there. Um, I guess we’ll just look in the boot because it’s it’s a bit boring. Success. The Volkswagen Practicality has been carried over. It’s a huge boot. And underneath here, you got a little bit more storage. In fact, it goes all the way back. You’ve even got a little bit of a cubby storage bin thing. There’s also a bit underneath of the underneath bit for well tools and anything you want. You’ll get the kids stuff, you get the shops in, all the things you would expect from what I would call a largeish family car. So, yeah, positive on that one at least. It’s just not something that I’ll be quiet. It’s not something that I would class as stylish. Give me a word to describe the outside of this car, Harry. Bland. Bland. That’s the Even the words boring. So, the inside of the Capri is much much better. You have some lighting there that you can’t fully tell in this daylight. Uh, and this sort of I will say pleather sort of stuff and some soft plastics there. Again, this isn’t too bad. Oh, look. Now, you have this again speaker fabric, which is a bit of a thing for Fords at the moment. And quite a nice dash, I have to say. That goes along. And it feels solid. Yeah. It’s all right. That is not bad. Whilst we’re there, go on. You know what though? It’s not a Ford glove box, is it? Oh, yeah. It’s Volkswagen glove box. Oh, no. It’s half a glove box. Now, this is relatively easy to use as an infotainment system, but the fact it’s kind of laidback there, I quite like that. It’s a nice way of displaying the screen rather than being in your face or up here. But check this out. Oh, storage. Hidden storage behind the screen. That, I have to say, is a genius, genius piece of interior design. This is the haptic. No, no. And it’s black gloss, so it’s scratched. Wireless phone chargers and uh a non-wireless phone charger slot, I guess. And you have somewhere to put some cups, sauces, whatever you want. And you can take that out and it [Applause] so that’s nice. Lots of storage. Nice place for your arm. Nice place for your cup holders. Um, and Harry, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but look what you get in this particular press car. This isn’t mine. It just came with the car. Oh, wow. Wow. How How many cars? Is that a genuine Ford cup? It could be. Now, the seats. Let’s have a look at these. Nice. They’re quite nice, aren’t they? Yeah, I don’t mind them. They’re just seen as a bad seat. Is that a modern car world? I don’t think these come standard, do they? Nice size. Nice panoramic. That’s good. Always like a panoramic roof. Really brightens the interior up. It’s an enclosed sort of place. I feel like I’m in the car a lot more cuz this is quite tall. Um, and there’s not a lot of light between you. You know, it’s quite a rad. It feels more sportive than it probably is from the outside, doesn’t it? Once you’re in it, it feels like quite a small car. Yeah. Looks pretty spacious about back there. Yeah, it’s it’s it’s even better. There you go. Yeah, it’s really good. It’s tons of space back here. Absolutely loads. Would someone go in the middle? Yeah, definitely would. Let’s have a have a little bit of a a mooch over. I mean, three adults had managed, but yeah, you’re a bit taller in the middle, so it’s a bit more But yeah, somebody short in the middle. Looks like tons of leg room. Absolutely. Loads. Yeah. Yeah. Not a problem at all, but it’s a big family car, isn’t it? When it comes to the interior, we are kind of being picky because this is a really good interior. It is. Yeah. Compared to what we’re comparing it against. And of course, we’re going to compare it um against the ID4 and five because that’s lit. Yeah. Yeah. We’re not doing it like, oh, look, is it is it as good as a Tesla? It’s the same car, but their interpretation of it and we’ll be doing the same scorers. Well, yeah. That’s why we did the ANA. The ENAC was a step above the ID45. And I know Ford have had a few years, aren’t they, to learn from box? Yeah, they’ve improved the recipe, haven’t they? And wow, what a what a Well, just that just how good is this? I love that screen. What a effective idea. We’ve seen this, haven’t we? As a lease deal. Oh, let’s go. Recently, in fact. Yeah. So, we’re looking at £3,200 down and uh £265 a month over two years. And that’s over 10,000 miles a year. So, 10,000 m per year. 260 o00 a month. Yeah. with the three something down D which I don’t think is bad and that’s that’s least that’s that’s hand it back at the end that’s it job done. It’s a lot of car for the money. That’s a lot of car for the money. Yeah. So what the prices prices right so it comes uh in uh have you been you have the style select and the premium. The style that starts at 41 41 a half thousand near enough. So it’s luxury bracket. Yep. The select is 48,000. All right. And weirdly enough, the premium starts at around 46,000. So the premium starts at less than the select, but the select has a bigger battery. So you can you can add the bigger battery to the premium. Uh and yes, it gets complicated. And that adds another 10 grand to it. Yeah, I know. You get extra horses and stuff like that. So that becomes uh 56,168 for that. You get uh all-wheel drive, 340 brake horsepower. And that’s the vehicle we’re in today, I believe. I’m sorry. This is not a 56 grand car. It’s not a 56 grand car. And that’s not a 56,000 pound indicator noise. I mean, it’s quick. And there’s 50 straight away. Yeah, it’s very quick, isn’t it? Yeah. It does feel all 340 horses, doesn’t it? But I think the money’s at the cheap end, isn’t it? Yeah. The value is definitely lower. The thing for me that sort of disappoints is the fact that they couldn’t make this under £40,000. of the cheapest version with the smallest battery. 41 and a half. Come on. Yeah. There’s no way that that’s ever going to be that when in the actual price you pay. That thing is if even if it was what $399. Yeah. It’s under the bracket. That saves the customer 2 and a half grandish over 5 years if you kept it that long. Yeah. Because of the luxury that annoys me, does that why would you be a grand and a half over that barrier? Exactly. Bonkers. It’s quiet. It’s It’s now surprisingly efficient. Uh, and there’s two battery sizes. What are the two battery sizes again? Two battery sizes are a The large battery is 79 kW and the smaller battery is 52. And in a car this size, I think I’d want the larger battery pack, I think. So, especially when you’re spending over 40 grand and paying again that luxury bracket. So, we’re looking at 48 grand list as a minimum. But again, I reckon you can you can get that. There’s going to be discounts on it’s a Ford a 2024 Ford Capri extended range that comes with a bigger battery. Uh and that is £30,000. 30? Yep. And that’s X demo with 2,000 miles. Which battery size again? This is saying 77. So it’s the bigger battery version. Yep. 30 grand. How old is it? Uh that’s the it’s a 2025. So about a year old. That’s lost £18,000. Any year? Yeah. So, brand new. Any discount? There’s a bit. Yeah, you can get the extended range for 41. So, there’s six, six, seven grand discounts on them. So, does All right. Does 41 and a bit make it more palatable for the extended battery? I think so. You’re still obviously paying the luxury stuff. I think so. But, but when you’re looking at 30 for a year old one? Yeah. I mean, get We keep saying this, don’t we? Why not just buy the secondhand one? But then if everyone does that, they Yeah. So, I think it needs people to lease them. Yeah. And then when you’re buying secondhand one as well, I find it bonkers that they’ve got they’re starting the list at 41485. Yeah, I know. No one’s paying it. So why why have Why have it on there? We say this time and time again. Save people some money. Two and a half grand again for 5 years if you kept it that long. It’s a lot of money to the person cuz it’s one of those where you think well I can afford the monthly payments whatever that may be. Oh by the way you need to pay this extra as well which is what 70 plus 450ish. Yeah it’s a lot of money. So, so you suddenly get 600 n quid tax bill. Yeah. Yeah. That’s like having two insuranceances. Yeah. Or more. It It winds me up. A bit of planning would have sorted that out, wouldn’t it? I can’t believe that no one at Ford went, “Hang on a minute. What? What? There’s a barrier, guys.” Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Can we Can we make one that is under the barrier? That aside, it’s a good car. This is practical. I mean, you’d have it just for that. I’m pretty sure. Look at that. Woo. But the thing is, how many people would know Yeah. that that’s there? If you didn’t know the car, you would never know that. It’s like a It’s like a safe. So 70% 200 mile range left. Yeah. I mean extended range of car of course. Yeah. So you’re looking at what 280 as an average all year round for this. More in summer less in winter of course and probably 225 230 for the smaller one. Yeah. Cuz they’re getting quite efficient now with the Volkswagen stuff, aren’t they? So that’s that’s pretty good. That’s now a plus. They used to be quite bad when when they first Yeah. The software was software got better. Another good thing about the Volkswagens is the uh battery degragation. Degradation over uh Yeah. The degragation. Degregation. It’s Yeah. Yeah. We’ve seen some reports, haven’t we? It’s like at 95% after 5,000 miles, which is Yeah. Yeah. And and look sounds like a Volkswagen. It does, but identifies as a Ford. But no, I you know what? I actually like this because from the outside I’ve only I’ve seen these many times from the outside. There’s quite a lot driving around. So there is again good lease deals probably company cars and I’m like I don’t like that cuz they’re all yellow as well. Yeah. And and I’m like now I’m inside I’m going I wouldn’t have it in this color. I don’t think I don’t think it suits the color. It’s not sporty. It doesn’t suit this color. I I would have preferred it if they hadn’t have used the Capri name because it’s nothing like a Capri. Well, shall I take say from the man himself why they do this? Why they doing it with the Puma? Why they’ve done it with the Capri? I don’t think I’ve mentioned this, but I once went to LA. Um, yes, first class lights and everything. Uh, and actually sat down, had a chat with Bill Ford himself. Everyone lost their minds in using the Mustang for an electric car. How dare you? How dare you? Anyway, look, if we launched a brand new car as in the name like the the Fangi. Yeah. Yeah. The Fangi. Yeah. Yeah. Uh the Ford Fangi, we’d have to spend 50 to 100 million worldwide so people know automatically the Fangi is a Ford. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You say, “I’ve just bought a Capri.” Everyone knows. You’ve just bought a Puma. Yeah. It’s a Ford instantly. So that’s why they’re reusing the names because it’s instantly a Ford. Yeah. So you can see why they do it because it makes sense. It’s just the purists get annoyed. It’s a name. Get over yourself. It’s it’s nothing. Yeah, it’s not like the dirtying the brand, you know. It’s not like people are going, I’m getting rid of my Capri now cuz I’ve had enough. But I I get what you’re saying. It’s it’s about as far removed as I Capri as you can possibly and there must have been something else they could have used. Yeah. Ford Explorer, the Capri, the Pummer. It’s all stuff we already know are Fords. It’s money. Oh, Harry, you’ve left somebody something in here. What have I left? Your nuts. Ah, do you know what? My nuts get everywhere. Smell nice though. Well, they do. I know. Your nuts nearly went up my nose. Yeah, it was dangerous. Could have gone in your mouth. You could have choked on them. Ford are back. Nice to see them. Are we declaring Ford back now? Because at the moment the the two main recent launches in EV World are actually very good. Yeah. Even though you do have the haptic things on the steering wheel which is awful. Yeah. It’s I guess what they’ve just been left with. Oh, hang on. Hang on. There we go. There we go. Do you know what that resets? If you’re ever feeling that the haptic feedback or something’s not right in the car, just move the screen. It’s a little bit IDish. Just move the screen. It’s like a factory reset for your soul. I mean, whoever’s buying the 56 grand Ford Capri is nuts. That that that must be company car manager only. You’re doing well if you if you if that’s on your company car list. But if you got 56 grand to spend in EV World, there’s far better cars. Far better cars. Yeah. Enyak or this? I’d prefer this. I’d go for this. Yeah. Obvious obviously, you know about the Volkswagen Mustang Maki. This 100%. Yeah. Ionic 5. Ooh, I probably go for Ionic 5. It just seems a You think? Yeah. It’s only 800 volt, isn’t it? You get the You know what? I’d have to drive them back to back. I prefer the inside of this, but the outside of the Ionic 5. Yeah, cuz the outside of this puts me off. It’s just a bit well and it’s like someone got Play-Doh and just made it into a shape. Coopra Tavver Scan similar, you know, it’s the same sort of platform. It is. The Coopra is nice, isn’t it? Might probably go for the Coopra. That did have a nice interior. Better interior, but it didn’t have Didn’t have that. Do you know what? I would rip this out of the Coopra. That would be brilliant. Used, it’s going to be a bargain. least get one if you can afford. Yeah, it seems to be good lease at the moment. I’ve no idea what the Volkswagens are doing, but I think they’re more than this. Um, and don’t get it in yellow. Yeah, that would be my definite. I mean, a fast a fast forward in a bright color. Yeah. Yeah. And one of these in a bright color. It’s just a bit right. Okay. Uh, we said bye, aren’t we? We said bye. We said bye. Did we say driving home podcast? Subscribe podcast. And if it was a food, it would be Oh, we didn’t do that. What food is it? What’s been reinvented? And it’s a lot better now than it used to be. Tell you what, what food is it in the comments? Uh, well, we’ll definitely say bye now after one last. A There we go.
Ford have yet again annoyed the purists by using an iconic name with an EV, but who cares about them! Is the car any good?
