The West Aurora School District 129 was able to obtain almost 1 million dollars in electric vehicle (EV) bus rebates from ComEd. The Aurora School District is trying to decrease the harmful emissions created from burning diesel and is doing its part to improve the air quality in the district. The ComEd rebate has allowed the district to purchase 27 additional electric school buses and 28 EV chargers. This has made the district one of the highest (if not the highest) in the number of electric school buses in the Northern part of Illinois. This is also part of the district`s commitment to providing cleaner and more environmentally sustainable transportation.
The electric buses will not discharge the harmful emissions created by burning diesel (as do the school buses currently) which will help improve the air quality. This is also the goal of the state of Illinois and the district’s commitment to combating climate change is also thanks to the state. The rebates are also part of ComEd’s Beneficial Electrification (BE) Plan which is aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to improve and enhance the state’s energy.
Significant Contribution to Illinois’ Environmental Goals
The electrification of West Aurora’s school bus fleet is part of the Illinois state’s ongoing strategy to advance sustainable transportation. The state aims to put one million electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads by 2030, with nearly 90 percent of EVs in the state operating in ComEd’s service territory. This initiative comes in response to the challenges posed by climate change and air pollution, which disproportionately impact communities across the region. The state’s EV program helps businesses and municipalities reduce their carbon footprint, with particular focus on low-income and underserved areas.
The Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) play a vital role in driving this transformation. The law, passed in 2021, requires a substantial increase in the adoption of electric vehicles, including school buses, to meet the state’s energy and climate objectives. With this latest initiative, West Aurora School District 129 joins other regions in setting a benchmark for green transportation solutions that are expected to benefit the community and its residents.

As of now, the program has awarded nearly $130 million in rebates, which have helped fund more than 8,700 charging ports and over 2,700 fleet electric vehicles. A substantial portion of these rebates, 80 percent, has been directed to low-income communities, ensuring that the transition to clean energy benefits those who need it most.
West Aurora’s electrification project also reflects broader trends in regional and national transportation policy. By increasing the number of electric vehicles on the road, Illinois is positioning itself as a leader in the clean energy transition. Furthermore, the new fleet of electric buses will have the potential to support the local grid by providing stored energy during periods of high demand, thus enhancing the region’s energy resilience.

As part of the long-term plan, ComEd’s rebate programs will continue through 2028, focusing on supporting business and municipal fleets across Illinois. The program will also ensure that areas primarily serving low-income communities receive additional support to enhance the state’s energy and climate goals. These investments are expected to help communities adapt to the demands of a low-carbon future, making transportation greener and more sustainable for all.
