Is This the Future Of EV’s?
This classic Corolla has been reborn and it’s electric. Toyota built an EV version of the legendary AE86 and yes, it’s still a manual. At the 2023 Tokyo Auto Salon, Toyota shocked everyone by unveiling the 86B concept, a fully electric version of the iconic Hachioku. Instead of making it a single gear engine, they used a six-speed manual gearbox out of a GR86 and kept the clutch pedal, meaning it can do this. Proving that electric cars can still be fun to drive. Under the hood, they used an electric assist motor from the Toyota Tundra hybrid system, powered by batteries from Alexus and Axe. All fitted into the original lightweight chassis, only weighing 100 kg more than standard. And to keep it true to its roots, Toyota even converted another 86 to run on hydrogen, showing two paths for classic car preservation. Will this be the future of classic cars?
