This country tried to go all electric and ban gas cars and it almost blew up in their face. Ethiopia’s capital sits around 7,500 ft where thin air already makes breathing tough and traffic fumes make it worse. When fuel prices spiked, the government said that starting January 2025, no more new gasoline or diesel cars. On paper, it sounded smart. In practice, things cracked fast, EV prices shot up, power bills climbed, and the whole capital had only a few dozen public chargers. Home charging barely worked because blackouts kept rolling through the city and the grid groaned from sudden nighttime demand. And that wasn’t the worst of it. Out of hundreds of thousands of electric cars, there were maybe 10 certified techs who could fix them. Need a headlight? Two months waiting for a shipment from China. Taxis queued at dead chargers and businesses bought diesel generators. The low point came when a hospital got a brand new electric ambulance. On its very first call, it ran out of charge.
