Mazda 6e preview – New EV in Australia in 2026
This is the Mazda 6E, a new fully electric sedan from the Japanese brand, but it’s not a Japanese-made car. And in this little preview, I’m going to give you a glimpse at it, give you an idea of what to expect to pay for it, and also show you the inside. So, let’s check it out. Thanks for subscribing. Mazda Australia hasn’t confirmed the exact pricing for the 6E just yet, but you can expect it to start below $55,000 before on-road costs, and it’s going to come handsomely speced as well with lovely lighting technology on the outside, nice big wheels, a beautiful interior trim with some really great technology inside, big screens of course, and much, much more. And it’s also got a pretty big battery pack with lots of EV driving range. So, let’s talk about that. Now, there’s only going to be one version of the 6E on offer in terms of the battery spec, and it’s a 78 kWh LFP battery offering up more than 500 ks of EV driving range. Now, in terms of the power, it has 190 kW and it’s a rearwheel drive sedan. So, yes, that means the motor is at the back. And on this particular European spec model, the charge port is on this side of the vehicle, the driver’s side. Wonder if that’ll change for our market. We’ll have to wait and see. Might not be ideal for curb parkers if it doesn’t change. But you’ve got AC charging, of course, and DC charging. Still to be confirmed what the rates for those charging applications are, but of course, it’s going to have a whole heap of EV range with more than 500ks available. But I’d love to know if you think that’s going to be enough for you to consider an electric Mazda. Now, if you’re not aware, this Mazda 6E is also called the EZ6, and it’s also a Chinese-built product based on a Changan or Deepple model. The sedan that it’s based on from China looks fantastic, and I think this one does too. And just have a look at the size of it. It is certainly going to be a fitting replacement for the existing Mazda 6, but it will only be available as this hatchback sedan model. No wagon on offer this time around. But there is a EZ60 electric SUV that’s based on the same platform, and Mazda Australia is very eager to have that as part of its model range, too. But let’s have a look at what’s on offer in terms of the practicality here. Uh first and foremost, you do have some pretty peculiar door handles. They sort of uh the push in and pull out ones, so they might not be ideal, but it will pop out for you when you approach the car. And at the back, you’ve got this rather stylish looking rear end, which does have a bit of a Mazda design to that rear light bar, of course. And you’ve got an electric tailgate. Just have a look at the space in here, people. Good amount of cargo capacity. Certainly going to be familyfriendly. and grandparent friendly. I would suggest for the type of buyer who might be considering this one. Uh underneath the boot floor, you will not find a spare, but that’s um not unusual, but you will find underneath the bonnet a frunk. Let’s have a look at it. Just open that door if I can ever get those hands used to those handles. And here we go. There you go. That is quite a front because there is no motor at the front. It’s exclusively a rear wheel drive model. You do get a massive amount of cargo capacity under the bonnet. Quite helpful. All right, let’s have a quick look at the interior of the Mazda 6E. And I’m going to do a much more detailed take on the interior here when the steering wheels on the correct side. But um first and foremost, the controls are not Mazderey. They are certainly donor vehicle depot style controls and so are the fonts on the screens. And I’m a bit of a font guy, people, so it might not gel with you if it doesn’t gel with me. Uh, but hey, what do you think about this massive touchscreen media system? Very different to any other Mazda screen in the model range right now. Of course, you’ve got a number of different controls and usability functions, but hey, I’m not going to go much more on the tech details here because there’s still a lot to be confirmed. But I will comment on the fact that you’ve got these lovely seats with beautiful trim. And yes, Mazda embossed into the seat back there. Just have a look at this Alcantara and leather finish. It looks amazing. Certainly keeping in line with the Mazda 6 of years gone by. Although maybe the pink light won’t suit your desires, but it is a configurable ambient light setup in here. And it feels up market. It feels modern and it feels high tech in the front. So, let’s check out the back seat space quickly, shall we? Right now, I love the fact that you’ve got the Mazda uh name plate emlazed across the back there. It looks fantastic. And in terms of the space back here, well, footroom is a little tight. It does have a big battery pack underneath here. Uh but leg room is decent and head room, well, it is actually quite tight. So, if you have taller people that you take places, it might not necessarily be the most comfortable. But I do think that the amenities are good back here. Let me show you some of the cool stuff. You’ve got a climate control system down here, as you can see. But you’ve also got these little controls here for the blinds on the glass roof. It’s a bit messy, but there’s been lots of fingers on this car today. So, if I press one of those buttons, you can see, look at that. It’ll close up that shade and make it a little bit more dark in here. It does feel quite dark, I have to say. But I do like this trim finishing in the back. And as well as that, there’s also a control here to adjust that seat forwards or backwards. So you can make your front seat passenger move forwards or backwards. I mean, it’s designed so that there’s no one sitting in that seat, but there’s directional vents there as well. You’ve got bottle holders in the doors. You’ve also got the Sony sound system, which might be unusual for Mazda owners. Uh, but this seat trim looks good. ISOIX points, three top tethers, a fold down armrest, all the stuff you’d expect, and plenty of comfort for this seat. It’s quite firm, but it does have a good level of support. So, it all bodess pretty well, I would suggest. The Mazda 6E seems like a pretty appealing product straight off the bat. Just have a look at the design of it and the interior of it, and you might be enticed by it, and the price could be right, too. But stay tuned and ring the bell if you want to be notified when I do a drive of this lefthand drive version in a couple of weeks time. And if you do subscribe, I’ll love you forever. Thanks very much. I’ll see you when I see you.

The Mazda 6e is not only a proper EV – the first one that the brand has sold in Australia aside from the quirky experimental MX-30.
It’s also the first car from China that the brand will offer. And it’s the product of joint venture between Mazda and Changan (Deepal).
The new Mazda 6e will have a price below $55K, have more than 500km of range, but watch the video and see if you think the execution is convincing enough….
