Record Drive: Episode 4 – The moments that made history
The final task in front of us now. We need to win. We need to beat the simulation we came here with. With such a record attempt, there are many things that could go wrong. This day, we started the challenge and we will break those records. But the weather was not playing into our cards. Everybody knows what we are here for and is excited to push through. Trust in each other is key. During this record drive, we are expecting to average 300 km/h on the track. And the battery will recharge in only 2 to 3 minutes. So, it is crazy quick in the pits, crazy quick on the track. The tyres will go through a lot, averaging 300 km/h. So, we will be changing the tyres up to eight times a day during this attempt. Record drives are always something special. In a record drive, you are doing something that no machine has done before. So, it is always a special feeling. Intense heat will be one of the big challenges expected during the drive. So, physical fitness becomes an even more relevant topic. Every driver goes through a health check in collaboration with our partner Adidas. They have incredible facilities in Herzogenaurach, and a lot of experience. We really relied on them to make sure that all drivers are perfectly prepared and ready for this record drive. It is one day until the mission start. We are looking at the weather forecasts and the latest car characteristics, really trying to refine how we will approach this mission in the coming days. The tension is high before the start. Everyone has worked so hard to this point. We have final briefings, component checks. In the end, everyone focuses on their task and gets ready. If there is one word that defines our mindset at AMG, it is ambition. That is who we are and who we have always been. We know how good this car is. We know our drivetrain technology is beyond anything else in the market. That is why we said: Let’s prove it. Not just anywhere, but under the most extreme conditions you can imagine. Pushing at speeds far beyond what is possible on virtually all public roads. Simply to prove what this drivetrain is capable of. Three, two, one! And we are underway for the drive. We are on our first day and first kilometres of our record attempt. We started to catch the longest distance per time ever executed by an EV car. Box box! Box box! Driver change! Successful driver change! We have just set a new 24-hour record. Achieving the furthest distance covered with an EV. The team did an awesome job. So much preparation went into it. Everyone was just excited, but also nervous. Now, once we made it, of course there is also a little bit of relief. But still, everyone is still super, super laser focused. We really smashed the existing record. We beat it by roughly 1,500 km. It is a tremendous gap and we are very, very proud of it because it shows how superior our technology is. We are here to challenge the limits of speed through radical innovation. Not with claims, but by real testing here in real, hot conditions. Today, history will continue. This is definitely a day in the books for AMG. The cars are working really hard. 300 km/h lap after lap after lap, which takes its toll on everything on the car. Once a day, what you can see behind us, we bring the car out of the pit, raise it up and go through a host of mechanical checks to make sure there is no damage, no problems and the car is safe to carry on. It is our second night shift. We were very proud to reach the next big milestone and did the 10,000 km together with this great crew here. It is just insane what we are doing. Doing 24 hours is one thing, doing 10,000 km is another thing and we are still going on. So, yeah, it is indescribable. Great job, guys! We have just passed 25,000 km. Mission control to green car: Box box! Box box! Charger one! We are currently on day 6. We have completed over 33,000 km, which is absolutely insane in six days. We have got 40,000 in our sights and so far we are on schedule. Around km 4, there is quite some smaller branches from the trees. Nothing too crazy, but something just to be aware of. Copy! Thank you, we will inform the other driver. Debris on track! Repeat, debris on track! Both drivers be aware. Safety car deployed. Nico to mission control: Track clear. Track is clear. We are good to go. Repeat: We are good to go. Great work from the team! Let us get back on track. Thank you very much! It is a pleasure to be a part of this. Congratulations for everything already achieved! Just finished my laps. Amazing to be a part of this project. It was just so smooth, even at that speed. The car felt just sort of flying around 300 km/h. So, really happy to be part of this. Last few kilometres. We are almost there. Just keep it tidy now. Right now, we are close to the end. Eight days are almost finished. Achieving the world record of driving around the world in eight days, something that nobody achieved before, is nearing an end. The team is here and we are so close to getting it done. Finish line is in sight. One last time: Box box! Box box! Great job, guys! We just drove around the world in under eight days. Phenomenal! That was an amazing feeling! The tension was so high and now we are relieved because we made it. Unbelievable emotions! We have been working on this for nearly two years. It has been epic. It is a community, a great team. We have had loads of fun. What a goal to chase! Well, I am just happy. The most rewarding thing is: We actually created a family. A team that came together to achieve something which no one has done so far. And they made it, they achieved it and now they will go home, but they will go home as members of a family. This is such an important record for Mercedes and Mercedes-AMG. We have shown that we have something really incredible, revolutionary technology, in the pipeline. We will launch it next year with our AMG.EA high-performance architecture and we really showcased that this technology will dominate the competition next year. But I think this is now the moment where we celebrate the success.
