Electric Cars help Chinese brands to hit record sales in the UK and Spain
Electrified vehicles have helped Chinese car companies hit record high sales figures in the United Kingdom and Australia and in fact numerous other countries. It’s all happening very very fast. This disruption I think it’s being kind of u not noticed by a lot of people. A lot of people who think that everything is just business as usual, but it’s certainly not. Hello my friends. Welcome to the channel. I’m Sam Evans. YouTube’s new algorithm means that you’re often not getting all of our videos in your feed. the 7,500. I’m pretty sure you’re probably not seeing a lot of them. In the description, there is a link to our newsletter. Click on that and you can get an update every day of all the latest news in the electric car industry. There’s a rapid rise in sales of plug-in hybrids and EVs that have helped Chinese automakers, including MG, who many British Bros think MG is a British brand, but it’s not. It’s Chinese. Plus, BOD and Cherry grab a record share of the UK new car market in September at 12.4%. They’ve never been anywhere near those numbers before. SIC or sake owned MG posted its best ever September sales of 14,600, taking the brand to eighth place among automakers for the month according to figures from the UK automotive association, the SMMT. In the in Australia, uh, Sake Motors and MG have been struggling for sales. Other Chinese brands have been disrupting even them. The brand’s 62% sales surge from the previous year was well led by the new hybrid version of the HS compact SUV, which was actually the UK’s bestselling hybrid after the Kia Sportage. MG was the second biggest seller of full hybrids after Toyota for the month. BD sales increased by 880% to 11,300 cars in September, making the UK the company’s second largest market after China. I mean, how did that happen? Body second largest market after China is the UK. I I’m really surprised to see that BD success has been driven by the seal U and that became the UK’s bestselling FEV for the month with sales of 5,400. The number was high enough to put BYD at the top of the manufacturer rankings for plug-in hybrid sales in the UK for the month, above Volkswagen, above BMW, and above local brand Land Rover. The second bestselling FEV was the JU7, also a Chinese vehicle from Cherry with sales of 5,000. That made the Ju the second best the second best seller of FEVs after BOD for the month. And I don’t see, to be honest, Legacy Automakers changing this uh disruption, you know, stopping this. It looks to me like a pivot point for Chinese car brands in the UK where a lot of consumers are saying, “Well, actually, they’re actually actually pretty good.” Altogether, Chinese brands took four of the top 10 electrified spaces, the top 10 sales charts with a plug-in hybrid version of the MGHS in fifth and the Omod 9 midsize SUV in ninth. Chinese automakers in fact captured 36% of the FEV market in September. And JQU and its sister brand Amoda took a market share of 3.5% in the UK in sales period, placing them 16th ahead of Renault and Tesla and just behind BY combined with sales from Cher’s newly launched brand uh Cherry Automobile. Uh they matched the market share of Vauhall and beat Peugeot and Scod for the month. Adding the combustion engine version, the JQU7 was the fourth bestselling model outright for September with sales of 6,500 ahead of the Build CLU in sixth place and the MGHS in eighth place. In other words, Chinese car brands dominated the top 10 in the UK. Securing fourth place was uh the JU 7 and yeah, I mean that’s a pretty remarkable result. What about EVs? Well, in terms of purely electric car sales, Build was the second largest automaker in the UK in September behind only Tesla with 5,900 sales. The company’s Celine 7 EV was the sixth bestselling EV and the only Chinese model in the top 10. Tesla was in first place. MG was the UK’s ninth largest seller of EVs in the month, led by the new S5 compact SUV. The S5 is basically a replacement for the MGZs EV. The UK doesn’t apply the same tariffs on Chinese built EVs as those levied by the European Union. However, no Chinese car qualifies for the UK’s new electric car grant, which rewards low CO2 manufacturing. You can get a discount of around £35,000 on a an electric car in the UK, but not on a Chinese one. And still they’re selling this well. The UK has become clearly a key market for Chinese automakers alongside Spain and Italy as they expand their reach across Europe. The absence of strong domestic manufacturers makes the British market more open for new brands. Benjamin Kibbles, senior automotive analyst at Data Force, told Automotive News Europe, “Traditionally strong volume manufacturers, most prominently Ford and Volk, have increased their prices, cut promotions, or thin their model range. That is leaving a gap for affordable cars. Cars in the UK are actually very expensive.” China’s automakers captured 11.3% of the Spanish market in September according to figures from local automotive association ANFAC. MG led sales after reaching eighth place among automakers for the month with with sales of 3,400 just ahead of SCOD. Tesla also had a great month in Spain as well. So automakers from China have taken respectively 12 and 11% of the UK and the Spanish car markets when they were non-existent in those markets only a few years ago. This is going to happen very very fast. This is a pivot point. A lot of people see these cars, they’ve never driven a Chinese car before. And guys, I’m not promoting them. I’m just telling you what’s going to happen. And as a result of all this extra all these extra consumers having these EVs, they’re going to probably tell their friends, “Hey, look, I’ve got this car. That’s pretty good. Their friends are probably going to consider one. Not necessarily buy one, but certainly consider one. And that’ll be a big change. That’ll drive a lot more sales over the coming years. Let me know your thoughts, guys. How do you see this playing out? Thanks for watching. The Sydney EV International Motor Show.
